Fred is that your son on the other Tenere? I know you said he was on a Wee.
No that is a friend/customer who bought a Super Tenere from me. He lives in Russellville, AR and was kind enough to put us up for the night and then rode with us the next day. My son was on his 09 DL650A.

Fred, how do you rate the two together? I have the Wasp bracket and am quite happy with it and the stock screen. I have used The MRA Vario screens on a couple of my V-Stroms and felt they were good, but not as good as when using a Madstad bracket and the stock screen.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Rod
Hi Rod,

While the Wasp bracket is good with the stock screen, I feel that it is even better with the MRA Vario. Quite often I will reach up and adjust the spolier for different conditions.

Thanks Fred. I didn't mean to drag this away from the tank bag discussion......

I have the bag and do not like it much. No external pockets except for the fanny pack thing which is uncomfortable and in the way when attached to the bag. The map pocket sucks and is completely the wrong shape to put a map in it. You have to fold over the corners of the map and maps don't like that. The front mounting clip is elastic and if you cinch down the rear buckle it pulls the bag out of it's designed mounting location and causes the magnet to rub the tank in a strange spot. Bungee rope thingys on the outside are useless and are for looks only. Anyone using anything different? I just am not happy with this bag...

I like the Yamaha OEM bag and will come to its defense. I posted earlier about its merits, but now with 25k+ miles on the S10, most of it with the bag attached, I think I have a better idea of the bag's strengths and weaknesses.

To address your gripes, yes, the map pocket isn't exactly map-sized, but very few are, especially those that are styled to a particular bike's tank shape. The strap isn't elastic and doesn't tension that great, but since the bag is basically a mag-mount, it's more of a security strap than a tensioning strap. Mine seems to stay put quite well in typical adventure biking use (which admittedly doesn't include much hard-core dirt riding at speed, something I avoid at all costs - if I were to do any hard-core rough riding, I wouldn't mount a tank bag at all). The front mini-pack is a nice size/shape and is easy to use (or take off if you don't need the space) - I agree that it does slightly intrude if you're riding the bike in an aggressive mode standing up. I've never had any issue with the mounting or the bag itself causing any tank wear/tear.

And the positives in my view.... the bag seems like a nice compromise between carrying capacity and size, especially with the flexibility to enlarge it upwards with the expanding panel. The combo of being magnetic AND having a security strap is unusual and works quite well - the only time I have any issue with the bag moving around is in VERY strong crosswinds, but then I've never found any tank bag to stay put very well in heavy crosswinds. The front hook is one of the simplest and easiest I've seen for quick detachment and the large reinforced carrying loop makes carrying the bag inside a restaurant or up to a hotel room relatively easy and comfortable. Once you get a little practice, removing the bag for refueling is a few-second process. The bungees on the side are nice to stuff things for short-term temporary use such as stowing gloves for the hotel-room commute. The included rain cover is one of the few which has a plastic window so you can see the map pocket when using it in the rain. Finally, the bag is extremely well made with high-quality zippers, strong Cordura fabric, and quality stitching. I've got thousands of touring miles on mine and it looks brand new. And it does fit the bike better than any aftermarket bag I've ever seen.

My biggest gripe is that the rear strap is only slightly long enough - I don't know why Yamaha is so chincey with the strap length. And I'm not especially fond of the way you have to loop it down through the tank hinge mount.

I think it is a nice bit of kit, but tank bags are a little bit like seats, windshields, oil types, etc. - lots of opinions and no right/wrong.

When I just need a small bag for a bottle of water, ear plugs, etc., I use the Joe Rocket Manta.

- Mark

+1 on the Yamaha bag. Yes, I do have to fold the top corners of my maps, but that is not a big problem for me. As far as movement, I lay a piece of rubberized shelf material under it when mounting and it helps keep it in place as well as protect the paint. On longer rides, I keep a water bladder in the bag and keep the end of the hose with the drinking nozzle secure under one of the "useless" bungee straps, so I can easily grab it with my left gloved hand and take a drink while moving. I also agree that it is one of the easiest off and on bags for refueling that I have ever had. Different bags for different folks, but I sold my Wolfman bag that I had been using on my KLR when I got the Yam bag for my S10.

Anybody know where I can find the "Snap Buckle" for the Yamaha tank bag? Yamaha doesn't offer it. They are the manufacturer and they don't have any????? Crystal, a corporate product specialist, said to have my dealer file a defective product claim. If approved they would only be able to replace the whole bag. I'm not holding my breath. The construction is relatively complex. Any repair would be nasty looking or very expensive. My best bet is to find a replacement buckle piece. Any ideas where I could find it?

I figured it out. Yamaha is not interested in selling a replacement snap buckle. Warranty claim is a waste of time. I was about to have major surgery done by attaching a completely new snap buckle to the bag. While staring at it with a coworker, it dawned on me that the eyeglass pouch has the same connector. Presto, magico, I cut the eyeglass pouch connector free and put it on the synch strap. Two problems solved: anchor strap fixed, and I now have more room for my ever expanding girth now that the pouch is removed. Life is good.

Yamaha told me they couldn't get the buckle but then a month later they called back and said they could and that they would send it for free. I pushed my luck and asked for two. They went along with that and now I have a spare.

Yep, often depends on WHO you talk to. Luck of the draw, it seems.

I like the Yamaha tank bag a lot, but I'm going to get a smaller one for day to day duty. First Gear has a small magnetic bag that'll work great for when I'm just commuting.

Its made for the bike so it fits well and looks good. I really like mine but I have noticed its fading from the sun exposure after only a couple years.
Its turning from black to charcoal gray but i still love it and it still looks good. I have had guys ask me who makes it even though it clearly says YAMAHA right on it.
You really cannot go wrong with this tankbag, it is very well made and very functional.

Ok, I have to chime in.

The yamaha tank bag is nice for long hauls.

ec90T I have a first gear tank bag. I call it the turtle. Love it! It has little magnetic 'feet' that you can turn out. I also attach it to the rear stock rack all the time.

doesn't hold up to real aggressive riding and is tiny, but great for commutes and pops right off and is easy to carry. I can put my TPS liner in it. Just barely.
