Yamaha side wind deflectors

I just got the Yamaha side deflectors and went to install them. Each side has three holes. The kit came with 8 well nuts and 6 screws. I was aggravated to find that the screws didn't fit the well nuts. They shipped the wrong size.

I went out and bought a kit with well nuts and screws. The well nuts match Yamaha's exactly, and the new screws are the right size. However, when I try to install them, the well nuts don't work at all. The rubber doesn't catch; it spins, binds, deforms and tears. This makes me think they included the wrong style of well nut, the kind with brass threads only on the end.

I've rarely been so frustrated by something that should be so trivial, and feel like just tossing it all in a bag and sending it back to Yamaha. And strangling whoever thought to use well nuts to attach windscreens instead of rubber washers.

Have any of you had a similar experience, or did your kit go on easily? I may try ordering 6 of the large grommet-style well nuts used for the windscreen mount. It could be those were originally intended.

(I also found out the Touratech adjustable windscreen mount is incompatible with side deflectors because it blocks the front mount holes.)

I did not have a problem with mine, went on easy peasy..
I did not have a problem with the well nuts or the screws. What you may need to do is hold the well nut while you tighten the screw.

From what I have read, you can use the Touratech mount and the side deflectors by using a longer screw. May have to fiddle but they have worked together..

Mine went on ok. I put a bit of finger pressure on the rubber to keep it from initially spinning. Once the rubber expanded and grabbed, not problem.

the rubber nuts fold in on themselves and make for a tight fit.

tighten the screw with one hand BY HAND...the other hand hold the rubber nut - tighten until a tool is needed.

it'll cinch up snug and you'll be in business.

4 of the 6 well nuts on the hardware set I got will not allow the screws to go in. I tried one of the wind shield screws and it did not fit either. I will be contacting the folks I ordered it from to get replacement hardware. On mine at least, it appears that the nuts were not threaded properly as all six screws threaded into the two well nuts that are OK. I woulda just tapped them but I don't have metric tap and dies at home.

I had the same problem. For me two of the six would not fit. I basically just kept fiddling with them and finally got them to go, but what should have taken 15 minutes to do ended up taking almost an hour. ::010::

I haven't had a chance to go out yet and try them out, but I am a little concerned. The whole setup does not seem or feel very sturdy.

They will be just fine. I had a bunch of well nuts on my FJR and never had an issue.

I just installed a set of genuine Yamaha side deflectors and it was a piece of cake. All 6 rubber well nuts went in as designed, all 6 screws went in as intended and they all tightened up just fine. I haven't been out for a ride with them yet though - maybe today... ::001:: ::26::

Same as mine. Too much pressure on the screw and you will force the flange on the wel-nut through the hole. Just light pressure to get the threads to engage and all normally goes well.

Mine have stayed snug and the deflectors DO work!

No problem at all with mine. Wasn't too impressed that the screws are plastic but they seem to work. I'll probably replace them with stainless steel at some point.

Why didn't you just ring the supplier and get them to supply a replacement set of fasteners? :-\

I did. I had wanted to try them out yesterday when we where out for 110 mile ride. At best, it will be late this week before I see the replacements.

Mine went on fine. I applied pressure to the screen to push it against the rubber flange to hold it in place so the screw didn't push the the nut back thru the hole. Seem to reduce the turbulence a but and look ::008::

I've got the Touratech bracket and the side deflectors installed and had no problems mounting both. I did have the stock screen mounted in the high position when I installed the TT bracket though. Maybe the higher position of the TT bracket enabled it to clear the mounting holes for the deflectors?

Installed my wings yesterday. One of the six plastic screws fit into the provided nuts. I tried to work with a couple to get them to fit but they would only bind up and ended up stripping the cross slot in the head. Pretty cheapo mount system IMHO. I happened to have some machine screws in the extra parts bin on my workbench that fit with flat washers. I had to shorten them a bit but all is well.

These well nuts are fairly common. They were on my FJR windscreen. Black plastic screws (Japanese Philips type) would cheese out easily on the heads. Threads were ok, but one had to be careful when starting them. In the case of the FJR, I think the screws were intentionally made of soft plastic so that they would pull out in case of an accident. Rider would not get speared by the shield, kind of like landing on a shovel. Many of us replaced the plastic with S/S screws. IIRC the plastic screws were available at Dennis Kirk and maybe Competition Accessories.

Also one had to be real careful when starting S/S bolts into the aluminum frames. Stainless and Aluminum don't 'get along' well. Those soft threads cheese out easily. Best to use anti seize on those threads or at least wet the threads with WD-40 before starting.

Of mine, two fit, and by the time I figured out they sent the wrong nuts I had destroyed one of the screws.

I ended up ordering a new set of 6 well nuts from Cal Sci, and along with some steel screws, they worked perfectly. The correct nuts have a metal ring on both ends, not just one end. I'm not sure who I'd write at Yamaha to discuss their incredibly aggravating mistake.

Interesting. My Touratech bracket obscures the wind deflector's front mounting holes in either position. For now I'm unable to use the bracket.
