Would you buy a gen 1 with 50,000 miles on the clock?

After 13-14 hours up side down and beaten to death, the girl still fired up and its the same bike he still rides everyday.
Just a note to future mishaps like this.
Before ever hitting the starter button after any bike has been upside down for a while it is highly advised to put the bike on the center stand in 6th gear and turn the rear wheel over until the engine has made a couple revolutions , if one cylinder fired and the other one had oil in the head it could easily bend a rod or stip starter parts.

For sure... I did this along with other precautionary "system checks". I was concerned it might be hydro locked. I was very surprised that there was almost no smoke once it started. I kept the bike on the center stand all night and manually turned over the motor several times to check for this scenario.

Im in the same boat trying to find a Gen2 cause of the upgrades, theres a local 82000km Gen1 at a shop for NZ 8.5k thats close to US 5k but its not that tidy it is 1 owner tho, dont know if CCT or basket upgraded. If it was in nicer condition and had the necessary upgrades id consider it.
There are a few other Gen1s availiable to me but its over a 2000km return trip including over 6hrs ferry travel - no can do due to lockdown rules :( it is fruuuustrating to say the least
Hi from another NZer, I brought my Gen1 with 52k's for $8k in very nice cond, CCT done, and a few extras, now has 64k, I did the south island tour in Nov. fully loaded to the max and 2 up, and had not one issue while away, I have had the clutch out, and has the sagged damper springs, new clutch basket here is a tad over $700, and you can buy a manual CCT for $75 off Trade.Me, which is my next move....if you find a cheap Gen 1 in good cond. consider it....I'm in Napier, so if you need to come north give me a call, got a place to camp if you need it...

I just bought a 2012 with 20,000 miles, very clean with great service history. I see mentions of CCT fixes in this thread, just trying to judge if this is a recall or a suggested fix ?

Assuming you can afford first choice, I'd never settle for second choice because of money. You'll always wish you had purchased what you really wanted. Put another way, don't let a "good deal" trick you into not getting what you really want. Having said that...

(1) Is it the bike that you really want? Are you really attracted to this one?

(2) Can you afford it?

(3) Is the price reasonable?

(4) Does the seller seem like a knowledgeable owner? Honest? Mature? Upfront about the good and the bad?

(5) Does the seller have maintenance records?

(6) Does it seem to run and ride good?

If that all adds up, get it.

Congrats on the new bike!

CCT did have a recall and there was a wiring recall on some specific bikes. Those were not on all of the gen 1 bikes, but all gen 1 bikes should replace the CCT at some point. Its not something imperative on a low mile bike like yours. As it approaches 50,000 probably a good idea to do it.

If it is a USA spec bike you can check to see if it has a recall

if you look at the CCT and it has 23p stamped on it, it’s an original. The upgraded part shows 2BS. It’s worth replacing for peace of mind.
If you’re UK based the MOT checker will show if the wiring harness recall is still outstanding (although it’s very likely been done).

First post here and maybe this has been asked and answered a million times already. Sorry.
I'm looking around for a ST and while I'd prefer a low mileage gen 2, I'm seeing 2012's with around 40-50k in the $5k range. That's an appealing price for me.
By comparison I see lower mileage gen 1's around $7k and gen 2's starting around $8k.
Would you buy a 2012 with 50k on the clock?
Thanks
yep, I brought mine last year with 53000, was told the CMT had already been done, 3 clutch basket springs had sagged, but loaded it to the max and did a two up tour.....didn't touch it once....i did expect the rear shock to part ways as it was cranked right down but, nope...am looking at putting an gen 2 clutch basket in....@NZ $700 ouch

Thanks for the welcome guys, I sold my Aprillia Caponord as I left NM and not had a bike for a few years, its great to get back to it.

Thank you for the clarity on ST issues, I will check the CCT, but sounds like I don`t need to worry immediately at only 20,000.

@Kyle_E VIN check was good on recalls thanks for the link.

A good time to change it is when you do the valve clearance check since you are already in there. I put a Gen II in mine and had no issues.
