Worn pressure plate

Hey guys,

I had a look at my pressure plate today when replacing the steels in my clutch pack. Had to do this because i burned my clutch pretty bad last summer and replaced only the friction plates.

The pressure plate does not look very healthy to me. The clutch boss side looks perfect but the pressure plate.....No good.

What do you guys think? Should i replace it? And what to replace it with. Stock or Barnett?

I would also think with all the extra heat you put into the diaphragm spring it would also need to be replaced along with the pressure plate.

I believe it would cost considerably more , but personally I would go with a barnet replacement.

Yeah i will probably go with the Barnett. I just don't know if i should replace it because the bike shifts well. A bit notchy if i don't rev match but nothing bad.

Yes I would. And probably install a Barnett PP.
Also do t forget to order and install #24/25/26
from the parts house (clutch parts)

Do i really need to replace number 24/25/26 and the diaphragm spring? They seem to work just fine. I don't mind spending a few extra bucks on maintenance but is it really needed...

I have never used a Barnett but i am sure they are great. That part needs to be replaced before you put it back together. Good luck with the repairs! Get back on the road!

Thanks! I am going to replace it all including all the parts Tabasco suggested. I think i will go for the OEM parts. I like the lighter pull and believe that Yamaha knows what they are doing. I don't do any extreme stuff so it probably is sufficient.

Yes Yamaha knows what they're doing, but the Barnett has a much smoother release and feel to it. Go with the Barnett pp and you will be very happy.

Barnett is ordered and will be arriving tomorrow. Let's see how it goes. Any tips for installation?

Its very straight forward. The only suggestion I would make is when you are first putting the plate up into the basket for the first time, make sure the teeth are inserted into the plates (fiber/metal) and then the Barnett pressure plate is seated up next to the first fiber plate. If you slap it up there and dont know, it might get hung up on one of the metal or fiber plates and then the Barnett is not sitting flush. When you go to ride it you wont be happy. It's NOT hard or tricky, just be aware of it.

If you are also switching out the push rod / bearing / little O-ring, make sure you do this before installing the Barnett. The wear between the ball bearing and the push rod is the reason you are changing it out (if you do change it). That little pocket of wear makes a difference on the pull and action of the clutch at your finger tips. These parts are NOT a "have to change out". I often suggest changing them when I'm working on a clutch because Im already have case off.

Awesome. Thanks Tabasco! I decided to follow up on your advice and ordered the push rod/bearing and or ring. Parts in the Netherlands are pretty expensive so i was a bit hesitant at first.

Just installed the pressure plate! It's hard to say much about it because in only drove for about 25 miles. It definitely feels 'different'. Is it normal for it to brake in a bit because it felt "rough" in the beginning and smoothed out a bit after a couple of miles? I do feel that the clutch is stronger and bites harder then stock. I just have to get used to the feel because it is different then stock.

The barnett plate has no polished finish on the backside where it contacts the friction plate. It's the same grey anodized finish as on the front. Maybe that's the rough part and that it needs to get smooth after some miles.

The Barnett back ‘wear’ surface will stay the gray color ‘forever’ and it’s CNC machined smooth. If your feeling something not that is jerky or abnormal it might be a problem with one or more of the clutch plates.

I think i just have to get used to it. I also forgot to put oil on the pp.

Here is the back of my Barnett after about 35K miles and hard off road... for reference ! Looks brand new !
