I love yellow Wings!

Wasn't great down here in southern Wisconsin today. Mostly just damp. Roads sort of dried by 3pm so I put another 35 mikes on the KLR

Actually I could have rode today because the new overnight snow mostly melted but the roads were so wet and sloppy.

It's soon to be winter here in Wisconsin. For some reason when it comes to using salt Wisconsin will put down 5lbs when 1lbs would be sufficient. Worse yet the also use some sort of brine. Anyone who knows anything about KTMs knows they rust up terribly in that sort of environment, turn fuzzy and start to dissolve.
I was thinking about this post as the front end was washing out from underneath me on Friday. Was it cinders, or ice?...not sure, but it was awful hard (impossible) to see. I was very lucky to catch just short of an up-close inspection. I know I was on ice a few moments later. And is that water running across the road, ice, or water loaded with salt? Winter riding in the mountains of WV is a whole different animal. Either way, I did not want a fuzzy KTM, so broke out the hose when I got home. No dissolving allow.

I keep the KLR coated with anti corrosion spray and if it really gets nasty out I wash the bike down with S100 or S1000 whichever one it is then recoat it with the ac spray. I've been told WD-40 works well too.

103 miles on the KLR so far this year! Not bad for January in WI.

If you need some inspiration checkout Bwokentoof on YouTube. Crazy Canuck rides his KLR in crazy places in the winter.

Nice to see you out there Donk. Great work...keep it up.

I had a Gen 1 (comically referred to as "Donkey") out lots in the winter too. It was great...never really cared too much about the salt, the snow, the nice summer roads that turned to muddy sh!t holes in the spring, or even the ice sometimes. Hey, it's old, it's light, it's tough, it's cheap to fix and it already has scratches.

I refer to my S10 as "Super Donkey"....but I'm thinking of changing it to "Fat Princess Donkey" instead. ...I'm definitely missing the old KLR a bit.

Got to love a KLR named Donkey!

I'm starting to notice something about the KLR. Not only is it a better bike than I expected it's a good bike. It's competent in every situation I've put it in. But that's not my point. My point is riding the KLR I get more instant street creed than I ever have. I've had several strangers walk up to me and comment on the KLR and how it can go anywhere or tell me stories about someone they knew who took one to Alaska or someplace not in the neighborhood. It really is quite interesting. Granted it's the middle of winter in WI and I'm out riding as soon as the plow trucks are off the road but seems they approach me assuming I must have been there too. Even an old gruff mechanic at work, I mean took him 2 years to decide to talk to me, we're talking old school here, said "KLR, nice bike all a man really needs." Think about it people see a GS or GSA and the first thought is "poser's probably never been farther than Starbucks parking lot." Even my wife calls it the little blue bike that could! I like mostly all bikes but there is something about this KLR.........

Funny you should say that. Everybody knows what a KLR is, but not a Tenere. So, when people ask me what a Tenere is, I tell them: just a 1200cc KLR. Instant recognition, and approval. And the KLR is a good bike . . . . for normal sized humans.
