I don't drink wine but my son does. I'm thinking I want to make him and his sweet wife a wine rack for Christmas. As I peruse the intarweb for info I see there are variety of bottle sizes - due to my complete ignorance on the subject I don't know what size to make the holes. Do you know? Is there a standard one size fits all?? I can't measure his bottles as they live 800 miles away.
Advice, specs, and general catcalling are all appreciated!
Thanks in advance!!

Depends on if you plan to make a rack that suspends the bottle by the neck or rests it on the body.

Necks are pretty universal but bodies can range in size, especially if they drink sparkling wine. A standard 4" hole should suffice, but maybe someone else will chime in with another opinion.

That show my ignorance.....I hadn't even considered a 'neck' style. But I think I'll stick with the body style.

Most wine bottles are about 3" in diameter. Some a bit bigger. Champagne/Sparkling wine are even larger.
If they only drink wine then any hole 3.5"-4" diameter should work fine.
That bottom picture is probably a 3.5" opening.

That sounds good. I'll likely either go 3.75 or 4 depending on the design. Thanks for the photos and advice, that helps!

Nobody on here has a wine bottle in their house? Now, if we needed a rack for Crown, Wild Turkey, or Makers Mark, I could help y'all out.

This is mine. Sorry for the picture but I think that you get an idea. This is more than enough. I would not recommend to storage a large number of bottles. Having 4-5 bottles at home is enough. You buy more as you drink them. Some wines improve inside the bottle, others not. Keep the wine in a dark place with mild constant temperature.

We just have a bunch of regular .75L bottles, not the big ones or boxes.
Regular bottles are 3" with a 1.2" neck
Sparkling Prosecco's and Roses are 3.5" with 1.4" necks

I'm sure there are more accurate measurements in metric.
