What Gen is that ? Or year ? Looks like the drive from pre 2008- 2009?
Like all things, the maintenance or up keep might have been garbage. I suspect like most big brands that has an issue like this, probably has everything to do with improper maintenance, probably not much to do with the “engineering’ of the original product.

It was a “rental” that is probably a fleet machine they might have bought from auction. Never know. (Not the best looked after or taken care of, same could be said for any brand machine if it’s not looked after or taken care of properly)

Sorry about your bad luck with this rental, that’s a real drag on your ride you wanted to enjoy.

For fun- go to the dealer and test ride a new one that might be 13-15 years newer. I think your report would be quite different in your assessment. The new ones are really awesome.

I had two in 2003/4. The first had so many faults, BMW replaced it with a new one after 6 months. The second one was no better, so I traded it in for an Aprilia Caponord which was utterly reliable over the next 10 years. Cruise control on the BMW was a revelation at the time, as was the radio/CD player and the starter motor powered reverse gear. It was extremely comfortable, though.

Trust me, hate me some Beemer. But that's what I was thinking too. Rentals get ragged on. Rental anything. Like CW's Jeep rental horror story. I can't believe that that they would have that old of a rental unit.

This was rental through Riders Share, like AirBNB but for bikes. The service we got from them and the owner is the bike were to notch. Literally a couple mins on their website and the tow truck was en route.
This BMW (a 2009) was not or first choice at all. It was just the closest to where we're staying in the Coachella Valley vs going all the way to Temecula to get something more to what we were looking for.
I'm not a sofa on wheels touring bike rider at all. It's too big, seat was too soft, the windshield blocked too much wind, I also have no need for a Stereo system and CD player on a bike...

I'll stick with my S10 (and my wife's Tiger900) and wait for the snow to melt when we get back home.

Zero stars, do not recommend.
Overheated and puked a ton of coolant in stop and go traffic getting in to Joshua Tree National Park. The ride in the tow truck was okay.

Looks like it got hot enough to melt the front fender!

I rented from Riders Share in Hawaii. Air-BNB of motor cycling. Good concept for owners of several motor cycles.

To all - Look up Living off the slab on Youtube he had a similar problem with his BMW K1600 while on his 60 day mother tour. He ended up selling his BMW upon returning from his trip out West prior to his K1600 he had a T12 which he rode to Alaska and back with no issues looking forward to hearing about his new Triumph

He did a comparison to his old s10. Will be interesting to see if he continues to compare them as he rides it more. I think he looked for another s10 but his dealer couldn’t get one.

Had a 1999 model before more electronics/helpers. Brembo brakes.

It was quite phenomenal for gas mileage and handling for the size of the girl.
My wife loved it but the rider seat was a torture device. Spent 800 on latest best aftermarket seat. Complete waste of money.
Traded it on new FJR IN 2014, and never looked back
