The issue is normally not with the filter, but rather the installation.
The Nut on the end is for removal only, not for installing the filter.
People use the nut to torque the filter on because it is convenient. This can weaken the can and leaks have happened later because the shell was weakened during installation.
The Nut is for removal not for installation. I am sure others will argue this , but you are wrong.
K&N make a decent filter, but their lack of clarity on the nuts purpose has given the brand a bad name and in fact resulted in them being banned from use in several racing orgs because of it.
This fact was prominent on their website years ago, but for some reason it was made harder to find on the site over time.
I guess they would rather more people buy their filters because they misunderstand the nuts purpose and deal with the fallout from failures. Or more likely they know if buyers realize the nut is only for removal it adds very little value and might choose something different reducing sales.
Either way if you choose a K&N do not use the nut for installing it.
