I find the bike to be a bit tall geared to really crawl but the biggest thing that helped me was changing the clutch on my 2012 to the 2014 unit. I guess my damper springs were really weak and caused some strange things to happen trying to crawl. I still have a lazy throttle below the 2000 rpm mark so I always keep a finger on the clutch. I have not flashed the ecu but I have turned the bypass screws out on the throttle bodies that pretty much took all the snatchyness out of the on off throttle movements. I have also put the Mita's E07 tires on it. WAAAAAAAAY better now!

Pruning shears are out. As said before, you can have and address the argument, but don't attack another member.

Well I did some really slow speed the other day. 0 mph at a stop and practiced track standing. Holy crap!! My balancing skills suck!! I was unable to hold this beast up at a dead stop for more than a second (probably less). Even in a safe area with no other vehicles I cant seem to come to a complete stop and start without putting a foot down.

The next step is to try to stop and start while standing. On my dirt bike I seem to have better luck. I'm even struggling doing lock to lock turns on this Super Tenere. I can see I need to just keep at it. I have a lot better luck doing maneuvers when standing than seated. I'm so used to riding off road standing. It's almost all I have known over the last 45 years. It was really strange jumping off the ST and getting on my Beta. The ST is very comfortable when seated and I feel stretched out in my legs. My Beta is cramped and punishes you when seated. As soon as you stand it's like an old friend and I'm very comfortable. I have stood a few times on the ST and it's not bad but I have nothing to compare it to because it has not seen the dirt yet.

I know it's two very different machines. I feel sad that I'm struggling at the slow speed stuff on this bike. And there is no denying the weight of this bike! At least I'm not waddling and can plant one foot down to hold me up. As soon as I'm moving even at walking pace It's all good. I sure do hope the Jimmy Lewis school will give me some good tips and skills to practice.

My speed is 7-8 mph. I go to a parking lot that has painted parking lines and make U turns in two spaces. Then figure 8's and circles, not easy on the S-10. They have a Fall Roundup every year and if you think you are good at slow speed you can enter the slow speed race. They have many games that are a lot of fun but the Harley boys always win.

I meant of course going dead slow without touching the clutch, on chain bikes I can easily adjust this by changing sprockets
but with ST I am stuck with whatever gear ratio they gave me.
Why would you ever want to go dead slow without touching the clutch? This is a wet clutch. It won't wear out and is meant to be used. The clutch allows infinitely variable gear ratios. A mate of mine who is a motocross champion explained the clutch to me. He controlled his speed on the straights by holding throttle full and vary speed with clutch.

That is correct squarbore you need to find the friction zone. I use my rear brake and the clutch that is the only way I can do my slow speed stuff. I think what they were asking is in first gear with clutch out what is your speed. This is going to vary due to idle RPM's per bike. 7 - 8 MPH is way too fast to do most slow speed parking lot tasks. I set up small cones about 6' - 8' apart and try to zig zag through them at slow speed maybe 1 to 3 MPH.

Of course, being a fuel injected motor, it will let you reduce speed a little by applying the brake(s). The computer will try and raise the rpms to keep the motor running. Years ago, Dodge had a commercial showing their truck(s) pulling and carrying other trucks at idle; nothing special.

I've seen some gatherings where the passenger has to stand up on the pegs, and gobble a weenie hanging from a string, while the driver maneuvers underneath it. Always makes my mind wander....
LOL!!:D

I'm not into it for the tricks and stunts. Those days are gone from the "family field meets" my desert racing club has every year. We have a slow speed race where you go as slow as you can without stopping. They have that rule because there are racers that can track stand a bike for a very long time in one spot.

I just want to be able to maneuver this beast in tight places. I have to say I'm pretty nervous for this upcoming "Riding Essential Skills Course" next month. I want to consider my self a solid novice rider. But I can hardly do a basic start and stop without dabbing a foot. I'm well aware that is a very basic beginner skill that almost anyone can do. I sure hope I don't look like a goofball. Good news is I will be taking my Beta. So it will be much easier (and cheaper) to pick up after a drop.

Yeah, the heavier the bike, the harder it is to balance; duh. But, the Beta will allow you to learn the skill. Once you do, it won't matter what bike you're riding, it'll come second nature.
