Still at work! Seven 24 hour shifts in the last eight days. ::007::

All work and no play is making this boy cranky!!! Though the overtime certainly helps take care of the bills and get me closer to getting the wife a new motorcycle. So glad she is ready to get a bike again. (Sold her last one when she was pregnant as I, at the time, had two that she could ride and it made no sense to have three just sitting there.) Just need to go shopping and find out what she wants.

::016:: should be fun this year!!!

At least you can still get OT Firefight.... even though we are 45 short in a department of 227, they cut us down to one 24hour shift/day for the city... so what do they do.... Put pieces out of service! 1 Engine and 1 Quint (or more) almost 4 times every week!!! If the citizens only knew.... and the bad thing is... you can say that about Anytown FD USA!
But enough about work!

I actually got to ride mine some today after putting the bags and bars on. Fed Ex says the Madstad and Bash plate will be in tomorrow...Just in time for the last two of my four day. And even though my ride was mostly errands, it still felt nice to get out and put 20 miles in. At least I am on the mend from having Pneumonia for the last week.

My madstad came in and I didnt realize it was in the front door. Took a look, mounted it immediately, can't wait for the test and tune! hopefully it fixes the few complaints about the air flow.

Felt like not having to hold things together when pulling the wheel. So I did what Yamaha does on the FJR from the factory.
Could you have used a few pieces of safety wire between spokes? I'm thinking you could make a bitchin' pentagram if you were good. :)

The smallest zirc fitting I could find was 6mm x 1.0 pitch. It's a little longer than the thickness of the shift lever and I had to put a washer under it so it wouldn't bind on the shifter piviot bolt, (which does have a grease groove in it at the center). Not entirely pleased with the washer, and used some loctite as well. I did not use a seal on the pivot next to the bike. There is a washer there that fits very well and for the purposes at hand, will perform that task well enough. The thought is that hitting the zirc with the grease gun will be something I do at oil change intervals as a normal part of my routine. It was essentially dry and had no lube when I pulled it apart, but did have grit and the stain of beginning corrosion on part of the pivot bolt. And I did blue loctite that in places when re-installing it, just as it was from the factory. I had Honda Moly 60 in the grease gun, so used that to lube it.

.
Nice job EricV. ::008::

I was also thinking of doing the same thing. Do you think if you grind down the end threads on the fitting it would work without washers?

Nice mod Eric. Since almost everyone will eventually encounter this problem, can you you make a new thread for Sluggish Shifter Repair. This will keep for this mod alive and not buried in hundreds of pages.

Installed my On/Off clutch bypass switch from Beaver Power. So now have 3 modes, Touring, Sport, and Super Sport. Hell of an option for $30. ::001::

I went to Beaver Power, but did not see it listed under the Super Tenere section. Could you throw the link up?

Err, no. ::005:: :D The grease fitting has a ball and spring inside it to keep dirt out. The spring is retained by the ID of the threaded end being swaged in a bit. If you try and grind it shorter, the spring comes out and it's no longer quite what you want. Guess how I know? :-[

As to using some safety wire to retain the cush drive, I'm not sure I'd want to put tension on the spokes that way. You could use a right angle drill and drill/tap a few holes in the side of teh hub, then screw in some small bolts so the cursh drive plate could not slip out. I considered that too.

I mounted a bottle of FOX labs 5.5 pepper spray (some of nastiest pepper spray a person can buy) to my handle bars... What can I say?! I have been accosted by different people when out in the middle of nowhere before on several occasions! I have run up on and surprised / been surprised by large black bear before also. Just sort of a first resort if I cant get to my piece...

So just something to think about guys....

What kind of nutters are you meeting out on trails?

Havent had any such experiences myself ... usually just a friendly wave, and a wave back is all I/they need to signal intentions.

Bears ... now that is different, particularly if Mama's cub is around.

I rode to Payson from the Mesa area with a group of 10 from church. We returned a different way, passing Lake Roosevelt and then through the mining towns of Globe and Miami. Numerous times during the ride I got a strong whiff of burning oil. Each time I started to think "what the heck?" then I would remember there were four Harley's ahead of me in the group :D

Is the road through Roosevelt paved now? It wasn't back in the mid-70's.

Well, a few years ago I had the misfortune of getting lost. I had made several wrong turns and end up miles off track before I realized my mistake. I ended up in the middle of nowhere on some guys private property(so he said, I never saw any signage). Anyway lets just say this guy was less than happy to see me when he had discovered me! So he comes running out of nowhere screaming and yelling about private property and I'm trying to explain that I'm lost. Well dude goes for my ignition key and is trying to turn my bike off and I guess take my key! Well we fumble around for a second and I just gas it and get the hell out of there!

The whole experience just made me think. That dude could have been up to anything out there! You could run into anyone doing anything out in the woods. These days out in the National park systems you could just as easely run across several outlaws with an Illegal grow operation and several million dollars on the line as you are likely to see some hikers. Think about it. And watch you're asses out there!
