Motorcycles might not be as clean as the latest new cars, but they are hardly among the big polluters. In California, the state with the largest number of registered motorcycles, they still comprise only about 3% of the vehicles on the road. Further, the annual mileage for motorcycles is much, much less than for the average car. The smog contribution by motorcycles is insignificant in the big picture, even in California where we ride year round. It’s got to be even smaller in other states.

In Mexico city and the sorrounding areas in what is call "Megalopolis" have a two times a year pollutant inspection call "Verificacion" for cars and trucks, not for bikes. For old vehicles the only way to get around it is to declare antique vehicle and for that matter you have to pass a very tough inspection and you can get the old car license plates (not easy to get) and then you are allowed to circulate with no "verificacion!"
Some other states in our country have "verificacion" but not all.
Also there is another restriction for vehcile that have high emission levels, where they can not circulate one day a week base on the last number of your license plate call "Hoy no Circula".
For Electric and Hybrid there are less restrictions but if there is day with a high pollutants measured by the city they might be kept in house base on their last license plate number.
It is a mess, because if you miss the day and your are cought by the police the vehicle will go to a "corralon" secure area where you can not get your car out till next day and there is a high fee for driving when you should not.
This is being in Mexico City probably since mid 90's.

Agreed. The article I read was years ago, before the advent of FI, or at least the large amount of bikes with it. What I understood was not that bikes were responsible for a large amount of the overall total pollution, but that they were responsible for more per unit, or c.i./c.c. Which is why I assumed that was the reason they were exempt; they were unable to pass.

But why bikes are equiped with cathalytic converters and close loop systems? do the manufacturers need to complay with regulations as a new vehicles?

Modern/new bikes do. The original article was written before all of the current emission systems were being used. Carburetor days. We've gotten spoiled. Whenever I come up behind a carbureted car/bike, I smell the gas. Everything is running correctly, they're just open systems. You smell gas behind a FI vehicle . . . . run, because something is wrong.

Yes, manufactures of motorcycles do. There was a time when it was all by percentages, a percentage of a manufacturer's offerings had to be clean enough to counter the dirty ones. Things like one cat in a dual exhaust came from that thinking. There have been a couple times when motorcycle emission testing has come up, then quietly tabled for future consideration. Implementation is usually the issue.

I swapped over all of the stuff removed from the 2015 S10 that was traded in on my new 2021 S10 ES……crash bars, SW Motech quick detach mounts, GPG cradle and wiring/ mount, handle bar risers, Givi tail trunk base, windshield, winglets, etc. I did manage to ride it 25 miles and adjust the handle bars, heated grip heat level, and suspension settings.

Yes, but the emission standards for new bikes are different than the requirements for new cars.

Did you read that our governor made a claim that we wouldn't have new car sales with gasoline engines by 2035?

That is a never ending discussion over here.

I heard on the radio that Kalifornia was trying to ban all gasoline lawn mowers.
As I understand it the ban will be on the sale of new gas powered lawn/yard equipment. Existing equipment will still be ok to use. Most homeowners with average tract home lots can probably get by with electric (battery or corded) but this will be a real issue for professional landscapers and maintenance businesses.

Another shot at small businesses, just like the lock downs. Don’t know how much longer I will stay here.

I saw a similar article about the impending ban. Apparently, propane is going to be what the pros go to.

New shoes on today and a 60 mile test ride to make sure I balanced them right. Getting to old to spoon off old tires geez. Front one was not bad but the back one was a biatch. Tires had plenty of tread she is a 2013 and they were original. Zipped down the superslab at a really zoomy speed. Baby likes her new shoes!
