What the heck is up with all the complaints on the factory fueling/mapping? Why is a re-flash needed?

Its just personal taste and /or farkling desire.
Some people will investigate the details and stick on some ...they’re trying to get their bike feel the way THEY want it. Its personnal.
They feel it. If they have the $ . Go!
Maybe if you’re riding since 30 years and have Owned like 50 different bikes you’re more in the details. Personnaly , its my third one and I love it! The more I ride it the more I appreciate.
And the more I appreciate it off-road too. Didn’t feel it twichy or anything...
If I was more fortunate man I’ll put a complete exhaust system, map ecu, bla bla bla...But for now the bike is a damn good performer!
Run the thing in S and TC most of the time 2 and Off . Sound good when I pass 5000rpm. Not scary in gravel. It just grab and go. Pretty impressive bike . For now that’s a keeper.
Maybe mine was flash...? don’t know!
It has the Uni filter pods and that add a little more sound down under the tank!

I really do believe that there is a good reason, that Yamaha have restricted is like that in the first 2-3 gear.
And thats is a concern to the drive train...
I'm not saying the drivetrain will blow up, when you remove the restriction, but maybe it wont last for 200000 miles ;-)

Åh, and I also like the engine braking..

Either I'm getting better at controlling the throttle or something is slowly changing in the bike, it has done nearly 36k miles and I now rarely experience throttle snatch. After decades of owning large cc 4's, riding a twin again took a bit of an adjustment.

I started on a 14 and had to richen + synch to somewhat solve the low-end slop. The 13 I'm on now is head and shoulders better and more along the lines of the OP's description. Hard to argue with flash suggestions but I see no need with this particular bike.

You can usually tell if it has been flashed by what temperature the fan activates at-I don’t know about Canadian bikes but someone on here could tell you.

I really dont have an issue with the way the bike runs above 2500 rpm. It is very sluggish below that rpm. I think if the idle was higher i dont think that would be a problem. In any case if i had a known good ecu extra i may give a flash a try but i dont want to mess with the stock unit. Not sure a flash would get this bike to run down low like my fj or my fjr does tho. Like Eric said they are four cylinder bikes with smaller pistons but on the other hand those bikes have 180 degree crank pins and it has all four pistons stopping and starting all at the same time each half stroke. That is still a lot of piston changing direction at the same time and yet they still crawl along even in slick conditions very nicely and controlable

The issue is not anywhere near as noticeable when riding off road, at least not for me.
My previous 13 had the twitchy throttle issue but it seems even more noticeable on my new 18.
Is it a deal breaker no but it is annoying sometimes.
Slow speeds in town is where I notice it the most.
I read about lots of folks claiming having the ECM flashed was the best thing they ever did, I would love to take one of these supposedly greatly improved Tenere’s for a test ride and decide for myself if I’d like to have mine flashed.
But either way I’m pretty well satisfied with my Tenere.
Yeah who has a flashed 2nd gen tester I can rent for an hour?

This fueling thing that lots of forum members are talking about puzzles the heck out of me? The OEM factory mapping is spot on and I can adjust the performance and throttling with proper gear selection and clutch use. I'm at the point that I can get the bike to run perfectly smooth with no lurching just below walking pace (in a straight line). I'm still struggling with lock to lock turning at slow speeds. But I'm of the opinion that is 100% rider issues.

Does anyone practice clutch use anymore? I know when I take my dirt bike in the mountains I never bother to re-jet. I just ride the thing. Sure it burbles a little bit, and can stall if I chop the throttle. With good throttle and clutch control I can have a pleasant trail ride.

The Super Tenere adjusts for elevation and is one of the most perfect fuel injected bikes I have ever ridden. I have also heard that the first three gears are limited. I have not experienced this. In sport mode the front wheel will loft up and motor will scream in 1st - 3rd. It idles at around 1000-1100 RPM and there is zero surge at any throttle setting. Did I happen to get one of the good bikes? Or is the CA model tuned better than the rest of the countries bikes?
Did you buy brand new or second owner? I find that it rides ok in oem, but when reflashed it is much better, not a sports bike but more capable.

Flash or no flash might as well be another oil thread. I, speaking for myself only, still must kind of suck at riding after 30 years and multiple motorcycles. I must suck the most at FI bikes because I've ridden a 2017 FZ-09, a 2016 Ducati Diavel, a 2017 BMW S1000XR, a 2019 Honda GoldWing, a 2018 BMW K1600GT, a 2004 VStrom 1000, a 2016 Vstrom 1000 and none, not one of these bikes threw an achor in the pavement like my 2017 Tenere in Sport mode, when you let off the throttle. (K1600GT and Goldwing were long demo rides. Others were friends bikes that i had at least an hour in the saddle) None of these bikes rocked like a bucking Bronco when going over bumps in any of their modes at any low speed. I, again, speaking for myself, can and will modulate a clutch lever when necessary, not constantly. Again, I have no riding or clutch skills and I took the easy way out of riding a great stock motorcycle and made it better, for me, by flashing. Again, i will offer anyone in the area that would like to try a Flashed Tenere, while I ride your Tenere. Nothing to lose or everything to gain?

I just came back from vacations 1 year apart, and rode the same roads. Skyline Drive and Blue Ridge Parkway. Last year, no flash, tour mode only because didn't flash yet. 1 year later, same roads, flash, sport mode and ............what you think?

Oh and I run overpriced Yamalube 15w-50 full synthetic with Ester. Because it works better, for me. What is Ester anyway? Ooooooo, new thread? Hahaha.

Enjoy the ride everyone.
