What is the most close-fitting set of side case racks?

I live in California and can split lanes on my commute, so I've never used side cases because of the ridiculous width. Even with a briefcase size Pelican case, it looks like most of the mounts for sale would push the cases way outside the width of the bike's handlebars. That is a no-go for my purposes.

What is the most close-fitting set of side case racks for sale for the Super Tenere? Ideally they wouldn't waste any space on the right hand side of the bike beyond ensuring clearance of the swingarm and brake components as they move through the suspension stroke.

"Ridiculous" is sort of relative, don't you think? ;)

Yamaha's own accessory side cases are narrower than the handlebar ends, and by a far amount. I believe some of the Jesse cases are, too, as well as the smaller Holans. All of these use a cut-out on the left case to have it fit closer and still clear the muffler.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info, but I'm more interested in the case racks rather than the cases. I would use Pelican cases on whatever racks I use, with a very narrow one on the left side. What I'm interested in knowing is if there is a rack out there that doesn't create that unnecessary gap on the right hand side in an effort to create symmetry with the muffler side.

Metal Mule, Holan, and Jeese racks fit your criteria, IIRC.

I have Touratech rack and boxes. the dimension from outside face to outside face of the rack alone is 20 inches. And there is no symmetry. The right side is real close to the frame.

I might be confused, but "symmetry" would be where the racks were equal distance from the subframe on both sides. One side would have a muffler taking up the gap, the other side wouldn't. (You could still mount something in that space)

But the racks with and without the panniers would be symmetric with the bike.

Example:

This setup is almost exactly the same width as bar ends. Within 1/4 inch, I believe.

My stock handlebars are 36" wide, the stock handguards are a little wider than this as they bow out a bit, guess about 37". My Jesse racks are just under 15" wide at the top bar, about 17" at the lower bar. This about as narrow as the Jesse mounts will go, the racks just hit the front seat in the low seat position. My Jesse Odyssey II bags are 35-1/2" wide. So there ya go.

Umm, I think you pretty much have to go out of your way to put luggage on that is wider than the bars. Did you go to narrow sport bike bars or something? My 9" Jesse's are narrower than my bars. A friends giant Carabou are narrower than his bars. They're giant in the other two dimensions. I think pretty much across the board you'll need to go to something where the box is 10" or more wide to get wider than the bars. Granted, I haven't had the fun of splitting yet with this bike, but if my bars miss their mirrors, the rest of the bike is a non-issue. If you're into cutting into and out of traffic far faster than is safe, then anything wider than your hips is going to hang up on somebody's bumper.
That being said, you need a flat rack. Twisted makes a decent one. Hebco and Becker. Touratech. Contact Carabou, see who they use, I think it was the H&B.

And naturally, the answer here is Top Box anyway.

Asymmetrical, that's the word you're looking for.

I started a topic awhile back and I think the Givi's were the closest in to the back without cases

I agree. I use Givi rack and cases. The right side is noticeably closer than the muffler side - so much so that I use a larger case on the right to make them visually equal. My wife likes the rounded shape of the Givi cases as she kept clipping her leg when mounting/dismounting on the square corner of the Yamaha ones.
