That was very nice of them indeed. I hope they don't hand you a bill afterwards!

Be advised that when the motor mount bolts are removed, the engine sags some. It's a commonly reported issue when someone is doing a crash bar install and tries to do both at the same time, instead of one side, then the other so that the motor is never completely loose. The dealer will have no issue with that, but some individuals might need to jack up the motor a bit to get alignment for the bolts to start threading in. Aluminum threads in the engine, so use care to not cross thread, for anyone doing this themselves.

wasn't asking if the plate was necessary , I was asking what it did....bear in mind that I have only just noticed that it's missing after 6 years and 46000 miles
It's nothing but a glorified splash guard. It's one of the first things I removed off mine. I bolted my crash bars directly to the head. Removing that plate takes away the vibrations from the bars. It's a very slick and simple modification.

I even pulled off the stupid plastic piece around the oil filter that acts as a "partial skid plate". I found it impedes air flow to the motor and causes overheating. The sump alone is more than stout enough to handle large hits with zero damage.

Here is an example of some of the stuff I drag the sump over. Nothing more than a few minor rock scratches. I have no clue why anyone would waste good money on a skid plate.

The Super Tenere has a bunch of unnecessary junk bolted to it from the factory. Hope this helps.

You're a very brave man Chris. I posted a video of some of the world's safest bikers going 6 inches over a white centre line for increased visibility and panties got twanged. It has been three hours since you posted and no incoming? I can only imagine that they've yet to to get back off the floor, compose themselves and all hell will break loose lololol...

Two sentences into that, if anyone hasn't figured out that was sarcasm, shame on them.
Shame on me then :) . I don't own a Tenere yet, so I don't know what the part is for. I presumed Chris wouldn't be taking his Tenere over those rocks, from what he has said he has rode on in the past, but I don't know if he hasn't got a bash plate...

Let's just say lots of huffing and puffing.
I got to thinking . . . . it's actually been a while since you've posted some of your more radical Chris-isms. Some of the newer members haven't learned that if Chris posts it. . . . and, it sounds like some "way out there s**t". . . . it probably is. :D

Yes Robert it's my lame attempt at humor. I figured when the OP "Mike" claimed he had over 46,000 miles without a major stressed part of the frame installed, this whole thread was a joke. I did not think Mike was serious. I cannot imagine this bike going that long without some major frame damage.

Depends on where & how you ride. My fat ass would have broke it almost immediately on my roads. Some of these guys are getting crazy mileage out of their tires, and brakes, which indicates nice, smooth riding.

Now, what Chris has done. . . . and what the Tenere is capable of. . . . are two different things. Chris has said it himself that he has a Beta for the gnarly stuff. Go to Youtube and search for professional riders on Super Teneres. There are guys out there that can throw it around like a 250cc dirt bike. Most of us will never come close to using the bike's full capabilities.

Yes the Beta is for the nasty stuff. I have some experience on the gnarly terrain with the Tenere but nothing like what a normal dirt bike can do. I will say I was surprised at where I was able to go on this beast. I have done some deep sand/silt, rocks, and ruts on rough jeep 2 track. No single track though.
