What is the importance of this part?

OK. My bike is 6 years old and has covered 46k miles

When I bought it brand new back in March 2015 I had Givi crash bars installed by the dealer

According to the Givi installation download the bars should bolt over item 15 in the diagram below

I've just noticed that it is missing on my bike........must have been left off by the dealership when the Givi crash bars were fitted all those years and miles ago

It appears to just bolt onto the front of the engine, so is it a protective plate? The Givi bars have massive brackets here which should offer some protection

I suppose after 6 years and 46k miles I needn't be too concerned but

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Cheers

Mike

It's made of steel, not aluminum. I thought it was to reinforce the block, not protect it from "stuff". It may have been put on there for the crash bars that Yamaha knew people were going to put on. People have commented negatively about the bars using the block as a support location. Like my tech said when I asked him "if you hit something hard enough to crack the block in that location, that's going to be the least of your problems."

If I were you, I'd locate, and install that part. My bars install over it. I would have to compromise the steel plate before the aluminum block.

On the other hand I could be completely wrong. (but, I'm pretty sure I'm not)

I thought that part was an engine mount. I have Givi bars which I’m sure mount to that bracket, Gen1 bike.

I’ll have a look in the morning.

curiosity got the better of me and I went down and had a look, it is an engine mount plate. My bars attached to it via additional brackets.

Erm, you need that. It is part of the structure of the bike, as the engine is classed as a stressed member.
yes,
totally agree i,d buy one and mount your givi bars properly

I. have seen my 2013 bike and the plate is to hang the engine from the main frame of the bike, I do not see any other engine support infront, so my guess is needs to be there! Will you be able to get a picture of the area? Regards.

Sierra, I think that this plate holds the engine from the main frame and I do not see any other place in front of the engine where is supported.
Yes, like Paul said, the engine is a stressed member; part of the frame. That's the only piece that it needs, but it definitely needs to be there.

I wonder if it went missing at crash bar installation (why?) or later at valve check. Then you had your strange headlight issue, which was pretty well unique when some bracketry had fractured IIRC. Now you will be studying all your old photos.

It does seem structurally important though, but doesn't seem to be a stock item, at least with Fowlers: -

Are the very expensive bolts (16) still there? Maybe you could get a bracket fabricated locally.

The front motor mount is missing and someone is actually asking it it's necessary?

Used one for $30 USD LINK

New one for $34.93 USD LINK

Used one from US for £21.85 with free shipping on Ebay UK

Used one from Canada for ~ £29 on ebay UK LINK

Buy one, and the bolts and install it.

Many thanks for all your replies

I wasn't asking if the plate was necessary , I was asking what it did....bear in mind that I have only just noticed that it's missing after 6 years and 46000 miles

When I got the bike back in 2015 I was given a box of bits that had been taken off the bike. I've just had a look in the box and there is the (brand new) plate and 4 bolts.

When I bought the bike the dealer was in the process of selling his business to a larger firm, so I've no definitive proof as to who the actual owner of the shop was when I bought the bike. Anyway I rang the shop today and spoke to the 'new owners' and I was amazed when they said

'No problem...bring the bike in and we'll fix it for you' even though they are no longer Yamaha dealers.

Very pleased with that and the fact that the mechanic who fitted the bars is no longer working there!
