What is a high mileage for a Super Tenere?

My Super Tenere, 2013, first registration in 2014. So far, I have driven a happy 160000 km. Regular service every 10,000 km, 40,000 valve controls. At 110000 km, 1 ignition coil at 110000 km replaced the remaining three pieces. At 110000 km, chain replacement was not necessary / preventative. Replaced H7 bulbs several times. At 150000 km fork oil replaced. The rest is ok, ready for the ride season.

I've got 65,000 miles (about 105,000 K) on my 2014. So far, I've had a couple headlights burn out, and just recently I replaced the rear wheel bearings (one had gone bad). That's literally all that's gone wrong on mine. I'm going to replace the fork seals this month, mainly as a preventative thing for this year's riding season, but they're my original seals and they've never leaked.
I have had a couple front fork seal issues.

Seal mates do work

SKF seals are better then stock in my experience+

fork condoms are good in high speed dirt

bulbs seem to burn out withing 300 miles of each other.

Not including manual CCT thats it at 48000 miles.

My 2011 (bought in 2013 with 2k miles on the clock) has done 40000 miles, and apart from a couple of hard stars, no problems. It seems low milage for it's age, but I was running 2 other bikes (now sold) I didn't commute on the ST, so it's always done long trips. It's now in for a full bearings change , forks and valves check. Nothing is broken, it's just for peace of mind. And my local, One-man-band, mechanic needs the business.

I replaced notchy steering head bearings, front wheel bearings and had the forks serviced at 101K, new Penske 8983 shock at 109K and replaced the rear wheel bearings at 112K. replaced spark plugs at 64K & 141K and gone thru a set or two of brake pads. No failures as of yet.

My 363,700 mile FXR HD and 433,500 mile V-Strom are decently high mileage bikes, Yes I'm betting the Tenere can go the distance!

Question on the Harley. Have you ever had to open up the motor for a top end or anything? Or has it been like a typical Japanese machine just normal maintenance.

OMG!!! I don't have enough time and space to list all of the things that fell off, broke, failed and blew up. So many things happened during the extended warranty they quit supporting it, parts or labor I'm paying for one or the other they said.
High level- 2 engine cases cracked, spring in transmission broke took out most gears and had to ride to the shop 30 miles in 1st gear, oil pump failure, transmission case replaced (other issue), carb fell off at stop light held to bike by the throttle cable, push rod rollers disintegrated twice, horn fell off twice, cracked sheetmetal, rear brake caliper worn where it was removed from the bike and in its place I made a spacer, 3 top end overbores, 3 drive belts and sprockets, clutch came apart once, many multiple jack shaft seal leaks and leaks in general, rusted exhause baffles blowing out riding down the road, the ever missing shifter and finally it dropped a valve took out the S&S case, top end and everything else.

Beware, it's now living in California somewhere with a Nighttrain engine, black w/flames. 1991 FXRS CONV. This probably 'normal' if you own a 1950's Norton :)

o_O BAHAHAAAA!! STOP!! I just peed a little. :D I have a good friend that bought a L.E. version brand new. He hit 250K miles years ago. Goes to Strugis annually/religiously. Wife rides on the back, and pulls a little trailer. He will be the first one to tell you, that if you don't want to work on a bike....don't get a Harley; and he loves his. He has had it apart dozens of times. Sometime for repair....sometimes for maintenance....sometimes just because he like taking it apart. He teases me about the sound of mine, and I tease him about fixing his. What ever makes you happy.

My good buddy just turned 105,000 miles.

The only thing note worthy has been a little issue with a TPS sensor recently.



Just a quick update: This little issue has been resolved with the Yamaha provided warranty TB wire (patch)..... Evidently, this was the issue and was fixed by Yamaha quickly. He now has 107,500 Miles on his 2012 Tenere....
I see this bike about once a week because we are friends. The bike still runs and sounds like a new 2020 bike....

I would not hesitate to buy a Tenere with 30+ K miles on it.... From everything I have seen "mechanical wise", these bikes should hit 200K miles with no issue (with a little bit of normal maintenance)

Im really OCD when it comes to engines. im not your "normal" mechanic, im also probably not the cheapest or the most expensive. What is also probably surprising is, I don't really have a flat rate. Each bike is slightly different depending on many things I have learned over the years. I would be happy to find out a few details about your bike if you would like to PM me. Appreciate it...... Had my bike for almost 5 years now and it's showing just under 42000m.

I really like the bike and it has never let me down and is well maintained but I'm wondering if it's worth trading to a 1 year old bike with less than 6k under its wheels that I've seen.

I know that they are a lot of riders out there with high mileage Super Tens. At what age/mileage did your bike start to show sighs of age/developing problems?

Just for reference it is a Gen 2 with electronic suspenders

The only thing that would get me to trade my Gen II would be a Gen III. Would be a waste of money to trade it for the same bike.

I think mine has around 13? K on it now. 108 put on by ErickV . Rostra cruise , cogent rear shock and gold valves and springs up front. I don't want a new bike. I hope this one lasts me a good while longer, and I've ridden an ES bike.

Reading all the comments, I do have a LONG WAY TO GO! mine has 48k kilometers (29k mi) is a 2013 and I'm very happy with it , so I have about 10% life gone in her and fills GREAT!
Thanks for the comments about high miliage, these comments will help people like me that our toy (properly mantain) will last for ever, IT IS GREAT!!!

At 50,000 miles I traded my 2013 for a new 2018, the main thing I was after was cruise control but there are lots of other small but very nice improvements. It was an expensive trade but I’m happy.
If I had known about all the nice improvements coming for the 2020 Honda Africa Twin DCT I might have waited and bought one of those instead.
I bought mine after comparing to Africa twin and don’t regret it at all Everything on Honda was an additional option

I bought my 2015 Super Tenere ES brand new in early '15. I now have about 45K miles on it. I rode BMW K bikes for 25 years and over 200K miles. When my wife quit riding with me and I started Adventure riding I researched all the offerings and decided to go with the Super Tenere ES. I added all kinds of farkles to the bike. My buddies and I talk bike to bike via Autocom and that allows me to have Sirius XM radio, cell phone communications on the fly and GPS navigation instructions. I added Givi crash bars, a Yamaha tall windscreen, and Yamaha wind deflectors. I went with all Yamaha side and top cases. I have ridden many motorcycles and have never ridden one where the stock seat was comfortable after an all day ride in the heat. My ST was no exception but that was taken care of with an aftermarket seat from Laam. I have done a lot of long rides with full camping gear. Once the stock tires were worn out at 11.700 miles I put on Hidneau K60's. I put these on in June 2017 in preparation for a 13,000 mile trip from Middle GA to Alaska and back. The Super Tenere loves the dirt roads of Canada and Alaska. These tires made the entire trip with miles to spare. I got 15K miles out of the rear and 24K miles out of the front. The front tire still had miles left but I put on another new set of K60's for another cross country ride. I have found the Hidenaus to be the perfect tires for me. The Super Tenere has been a great bike for me. I did have the ECU flashed for better performance. Other than that all I have had to do is normal maintenance. Rear brakes pads replaced once and headlight bulbs replaced twice. I changed the air filter after the Alaska ride. Lots of dust from the Dalton Highway.. As everyone knows the ST's have a lot of engine noise. This is the ONLY thing I don't like about this motorcycle. I don't know if it is because I changed helmets or because sometimes I forget to take my hearing aids out but after 45K miles my ST does seem to be louder in engine noise and transmission noise. I am inclined to blame it on the Scorpion AT950 helmet and hearing aids. I have used Amsoil full synthetic oil for the last 20K miles. Just last week I finally added the STS turn signal self canceling kit. Remembering to turn off my turn signal has always been a problem for me. My BMW.s always self cancelled and I just never got used to having to do it manually. The STS kit was kind of a pain to install because the instructions were not very thorough. With much help from the forum I was able to get'er done. I have only taken a couple of short rides since I installed it but so far it has worked like a charm. I have no regrets about choosing a Super Tenere ES for my Adventure riding. Way cheaper than a BMW GS 1200 and maybe more dependable. Ride Safely and Ride often.

I just recently went over 76,000 miles on mine. It would be considerably more, had the pandemic not slowed a lot of things down in 2020. Still haven't had any issues at all. I did replace the fork seals and pistons since my last post; they weren't leaking, but I had to change the fork oil anyway, so I did that too.

My biggest conundrum is knowing that, if they stop making this, I won't be able to get a new one when I finally decide it's time to retire the 2014. Then again, I might drop dead before the bike does.
