I have just gotten 1000 miles in a couple weeks. Been dealing with cold weather here in Colorado so has slowed me down a bit. I came from a Triumph Explorer and the S10 is a fine machine. It is not as fast as the Triumph but the rideability is fantastic. Just put a couple hundred miles on it yesterday with two up and it was really nice. I am in the honeymoon stage still but I am impressed so far. My best discription of this bike is “you can just ride” and not worry about whether the bike will be dependable. Have owned a lot of Yamaha’s over the years and hope this will be as good as the rest....they were trouble free and awesome.

My 2016 seems to have really come alive after 8,000 miles. I'm amazed at how peppy it is. Last bike was a KTM 1290 SA and that was fast, but too much power isn't always necessary, also I like the shaft drive on the S10. KTM is expensive to maintain, also.

For some reason, these bikes don't really break in for a good 5,000+ miles.

Does it have caramic inside cylinders?
If so, Could it be the reason?

Don't think it has ceramic coatings and the break in thought applies to others aspects, as well. Shifting, suspension, etc.

I agree with your 5k assessment, but I only saw a difference in engine performance. Software programming? There is definitely more grunt now. I noticed it at about 5800mi, but thought it was my imagination until I saw your post about it a while back. ::001::

This is where my bike is parked all day while I'm at work.
25 feet away and in sight.
Every time I look out there and see it I still think how cool that thing is.

With a few miles on it now, I still can't wait to ride it more.

My friend has a Versys 1K. Silky smooth inline 4 and nice bike overall but feels totally different than S10. My friend dislikes twins because of the vibes but I think the S10 is a way more capable bike and a shaftie! Power levels are similar but I would say the Yamaha is more in the league of the GS.
It's that quad cylinder boringness that thrills the S**T out of you for awhile but then it feels like another Jap bike.
Always wanted a 1200 ZRX got one beefed it up but never was thrilled as much as i was with a triple out of the gate rush. The Tenere just feels like nothing else i have owned, it fits my laid back but hooligan at the same time appetite. I call it my two wheel Jeep.

Every time I feel somewhat bored, I turn off the TCS and remember how it feels to pick up the front wheel.

Mine didn't lift the front wheel until after 5k miles; suddenly, one day, there was more power. Now, even with my fat a** on it, it's only a throttle twist away. (I keep the TCS on to keep the front wheel from STAYING in the air) ::26::

Have mercy!!! That's 170250 miles!!! You have to do a write up! What oil do you use? What other modifications such as flash ECU?

You kidding?
Eemsreno?

100% stock. He MIGHT replace the seat if you ripped it open and pulled all the foam out. Maybe.

I'm training to be an advanced tutor, was out today for 180 miles in really shitty conditions and fair play it was awesome, stock tyres and so confidence inspiring, an awesome day made all the better for being on an awesome bike.

That's impressive. Your profile says you're in USA but your bike is set to metric/km. Any reason why or have I missed something?

well not quite. He does have a rather pricey Touratech rear shock on it.

The number is higher that way. Lol
Easy 3 second press of the display button to switch it back and forth.

I think he swapped shocks between the 12 and 17? So the 12 is still stock Yamaha just not all 5+ years old!

Sorry for no replies guys.
I just got home from Moab with the boys.
When I'm on the road I have no worldly communications.

That is correct BigBob The good shock went on the 17. Back to stock on the 12.

Snake , I tried a Seat Concepts and just liked the stock the best so it is back to STOCK, Yeah!

SilverBullet knows the reason, Big looking numbers, Lol.

Nelso, Is Iowa really in the USA?

Xclimation, Not any mods that I could do to make it better, Bike is great! I use 15-50 Mobil 1 in the warmer weather and 5-40 Turbo Diesel Mobil 1 in cold weather.
But unless I'm travelling I change it every 3,000 miles. Don't like dirty oil. And I'm NOT going to change my mind.

Checkswrecks, There is always someone out there with more miles somewhere. And there is always someone faster. [now days most guys are faster ]
