I'm chewing on shipping my bike to So. Cal. Beggining of May Riding the 1 and 101 all that i can. To Seattle. Then, shipping bike home.

I did this trip in my pick up truck in 1990. Will be crazy to see the changes. Anyone done this on a bike? I know some great places along the way and have scoped out some more. Lotsa camping and hot springs.

Be my first real trip over 350 miles. But im not a whiner amd know it will hurt some times.

Im thinking about shipping my big dry bag to santa barbara to be a smaller target in SOCAL.

Input is good, shoot me down, tell me how it will suck.

It won't suck. Why are you shipping the bike? You're profile location isn't really sufficient to tell people where you are. That tid bit of info helps place things into context.

I've ridden all of 1/101 a few times. Lots to see and do. Plenty of camping available on or slightly off the route. But it's a couple of days for me, so you're doing it on a different time line.

From colorado. Saves 2500 boring miles and it gives me much much more coast time. I got peeps in seattle and san deigo for storage. Brother in law transports vehicles.

It's a beautiful ride. Be ready for wet weather up north and give yourself the days to not rush it.

Be advised that Hwy 1 between Morro Bay and Montery is closed at Mud Creek and will be for most of 2018.
You can get around to the upper portion by taking Naciemento-Ferguson Rd.

I highly recommend it. I passes through some of the last unspoiled coastal land that is available to the public. It was once part of William Randolph Hearst's holdings.
2 points of interest. As the road takes you through Fort Hunter Liggett, check out Mission San Antonio de Padua (outside of the base) and the Hearst Hacienda Courtyard (inside the base).
If you plan ahead, you can stay at the Hacienda if you make a reservation.

HE IS RIGHT ABOUT THE RAIN, AND THE TRAFFIC ON THE 1 WILL DRIVE YOU NUTS. RECOMMEND THE LOST HIGHWAY OUTSIDE OF GARBORVILLE, IT ADD A FEW MILES BUT WORTH IT, AS YOU RIDE THROUGH THE REDWOOD TREES. DO NOT STAY IN GARBORVILLE, IT IS A PIT. THIEVES AND DOPERS ABOUND. ::021:: ::021::

I just visited the California DOT web site. I didn't think so many chunks of the 1 were still closed. The big news recently was a whole new bridge being built in record time. Thought they were done. They list two full on closures, the Mud Creek one and one up near Muir Woods, and a bunch of one way controls. I went through a bunch of the one way sections this past summer, not bad mid week.

Mud Creek https://goo.gl/maps/h8EJW8NPRhG2 the extended land at Mud Creek is from the slides. What I have heard is they will build a bridge that crosses Mud Creek. This should take awhile.

Ragged Point to Gorda https://goo.gl/maps/HoUgzn5ipSm Ragged Point is worth the stop. Last I heard they were allowing people to drive to Salmon Creek Trailhead
or https://goo.gl/maps/eLxJyqq9y622 you would be missing part of 101 but gaining some good back road riding.

Nacimiento-Fergusson Rd is a fun road to ride though be very careful with the added traffic.

Usal Rd is a dirt road. It's a pretty ride back to Usal Creek, nice beach and camping. One real steep section when you drop down to the beach level, could be some erosion issues now. My understanding is that it's not passable all the way through. It goes through many pieces of property, locked gates, zero maintenance.

Tim, I'd heard of that Nacimiento Furgusson Rd for years, never really new where it was. Do you think everybody and their brother is using that route or only locals? Looks like more than just a day trip...

I wouldn't worry about being a smaller target. Riding in the L.A. area with the dry bag will be no different than Santa Barbara. Matter of fact, may be better than dealing with the tourists that are not paying attention, and the narrow lanes in Santa Barbara due to all the freeway construction. As long as you're not much wider than the bar ends, you will not have any problems. Unbelievable, but people actually give you room here. Use to split traffic with a Harley Electra Glide all the time. Be aware the weekend can be worse in the L.A. - San Diego area if it is a nice weekend.

It will only suck if you did not give yourself a realistic time line. Understand it will be slow on the coast, and enjoy it.

Be aware also that in places where they exist, motorcycles are allowed to use the car pool lanes, even if riding one up.

... including construction trucks. Be careful. I still think it is worth the ride.

Thats true for all of the US.

Lane sharing being legal in California is a huge boon to riders, and most drivers there are used to it in the more heavily congested parts of the state.
