I email a dealer about this ad on Cycle Trader:

He tells me that it was a scam, they don't sell Yamahas. How does it benefit anyone to do something like that?

Did you call the seller? The number in the ad is not Baxter's. I think I'd start the conversation with why are you listing your ad as Baxter's Cycle when they aren't the seller? Anything other than "you can see the bike at this address" means it's surely a scam.

My fantasy was that with a healthy down payment, they could hold it for a couple of months. It is winter after all, and in 2 months I'll have the funds. If it's an honest bike, and he just mislisted it, it'll probably be gone by then.

You're right. There was a mix-up- they have the bike as a trade-in, and are going to go for a down payment to hold it.
I'm going to go look at it Saturday. I'm just slightly excited.
