Well, THAT could’ve ended badly

Commuting on the S10 everyday, I started noticing a raised tread pattern on my Shinko front tire. I had actually thought about posting a pic of it and getting everyone’s feedback as to whether or not it needed replacing. As it turns out, the tire gave me an answer yesterday.

I've run a Shinko several times and I had something similar. Have a set on now no issues yet.

Had something like that happen to Dunlop Road Smart front tire on my ST1300, except it threw about an 8" chunk along the centerline. Luckily it happened just as I entered an off ramp after 40+ miles running at 70-80 MPH. I was able to limp the two blocks to work, but the steel belt shredded and punctured the inner liner, so lost all air too. Been a little shy of Dunlop since. The tire only had about 5K miles on it and I know the inflation was correct as my bike was equipped with a SmarTire TPMS system at the time.

I’ve been through several iterations of Shinkos myself. This was the first time I had a problem.

Glad you got to work safely.

looks like some cupping going on as well .... bulges ,swelling , knots and anything that looks odd is probably a sign that the tire is not happy . under inflation , running over edge objects , jumping curbs , pot holes and the list goes on.... can damage the internal structure of the tire , some times it never shows up other times it does .... the tire was telling Wheeling a lot , he lucky it still held pressure . think about all a tire does to keep us safe and happy .
tires can be damaged early in life and failure occurs and we blame a good tire that probably was damaged in some way while on our bikes . and because it's a new tire with lots of tread we blame the manufacture .... not saying a new tire cant fail , but normally they work just fine .... had 2 brand new Tenere's in my life both ended up with nails in the back tires the first 1000 miles , must be the tires , only OEM tires do that , not had a nail in any other tire I've mounted in 9 years of Tenere ownership .... I have Shinkos on my new Tenere , work great , nails are afraid of them , but front showing a little cupping starting .... at least they were cheap (in expensive I mean ) ....

Best of all you weren't hurt. Not my favorite tires, but having used 705's for a few changes I'd never experienced a problem other than the front getting slightly 'cuppy' toward the end of the 2nd rear's life, about 8k mi. They hook considerably better than stock Battlewings in light offroad and sacrifice the Battlewing's road tactility/surety on paved. For what they cost and what I did with them I was pleased.

Yes, I’m grateful for not suffering any (additional) injuries. This body has seen enough trauma to last me a few years!

Other than the Shinkos, I had some Anakees that used to howl at around 40 - 45 mph. They may have been a more expensive tire, but that noise was driving me crazy/crazier.

I don’t check the inflation as often as I probably should, but whenever I have checked them, they’ve never been under inflated by more than 1-2 psi.
I had a buddy who had a blowout in his S10 to a point where the rear tire broke its seal and he still managed to ride it home. How he did it is beyond me, but I was impressed that tire held enough rigidity to get him back home.

this set of 705 on my bike the rear is looking normal ,the wear normal . the front is showing the beginning of cupping . so the front will probably not last as long as it should .... loud tires SUCK.... I'm kinda tired of trying multiple brands , but would like to find a good all around tire (70/30 at least to handle gravel roads) that's not loud not afraid of rain and will last 10k ...

I've probably mounted a couple hundred Shinko tires. My number one problem with Shinkos is how easy they are to seat on the rim. I like for it to take enough air to seat a tire on the rom so it makes a loud "pop" when it goes on. The Shinkos seat on the rim very easily. I've had guys put them on their 1200-1500 pound Harleys and I've warned them that if they get a flat, there's no way the tire will stay on the rim. I've even let the air out of some Shinkos and pushed the tire off the bead with my hands. I sell tires for a living and I don't have Shinkos on anything I ride. JMHO.

Tire noise is one thing but the damned Anakees howled, with the volume going up in every turn.

My son and I swore off of Shinkos years ago, after one came apart on him. I've just seen too many images like yours where the bare area has virtually NO little fragments of rubber remaining attached to the fabric. In a good bond, there would be lots of little raggedy bits still there, where the knob has torn away. Yours is showing a localized lack of bond penetration, which could be from a number of causes, such as contamination of the fabric, fabric pre-temp in the mold, temperature during the cure, temp of the rubber, the rubber formula itself, etc.

I put 4K miles on a set of Anakee 3's before I had to take them off. They would howl from 42-45mph and 62-65mph. Just at those speeds. You could watch the speedo go 39, 40, 41 and when it hit 42 the noise started. Sounded like whoooooooooooo.

Strange. I’ve got Anakee wilds on at the moment and although I can hear a slight droning noise at about 70 it doesn’t affect me. I do use earplugs though.
