vista cruise (not universal) install tips?

I got a vista cruise and I have no idea how to fasten the lower half to something solid. I know I need to shave some size off of the plastic washer that is between the grip and the throttle cable housing to reduce friction there, but how in the heck do I secure the VC to the bike?!? I don’t want to return this thing.

if you have done it, any tips or photos would be very helpful

The standard VC works fine. Don't over think it, trim the end of the L off and drill a small hole thru the VC tab into the plastic throttle housing, then use a screw to secure it in place. This is for the standard Yamaha twin throttle cable design, not the big oversize universal VC that fits over the grips.

Alternately, you can make a small bracket to secure to the existing bolt.

I've done this on several bikes, including the Super Ten. Sorry, never took a pic of it. Here is a pic of my current ride with that mod.

Thanks for that pic EricV. I was worried about tapping into that housing and interfering with the cables in there. I'll use a short enough screw. i now see that piece is metal and not plastic like I thought

I have done it with metal and plastic housings w/o issue. Use a small diameter screw and let it cut it's own threads as it goes in. (do pre-drill the pilot hole) There is plenty of clearance in that area internally. You just need to stop rotation of the VC body. On one install I used an aluminum strip that I had from some other left over project and just bent it in a L shape to attach to an existing bolt on the housing and tuck in to the VC similar to the stock metal clip included. It did require the thumb lever to be at a different angle, but I found I got comfortable with it quickly.

On my Gen 1 I went with an L shaped bracket.
It allowed the mechanism to float. I does cause a bit of an awkward reach to the start button, but I don't notice it anymore.

so here’s what i did- I drilled into the throttle cable housing and secured it there.

I used a selftapping screw to drill through the vista cruise and the housing to ensure a good fit. I had to do this while the pieces were off the bike due to limited clearance between the throttle tube and where i wanted to drill. the first hole brought the VC off center and caused it to bind when disengaged. so I had to mount the throttle housing and the VC, mark a new hole and redrill it. getting the hole on the protruding ring of the housing made sure the VC would sit flush and not at an angle

then I screwed the housing and VC together while they were off the bike and marked the inside edge of the screw, removed the screw, and hacksawed the end of the screw off so it sat perfectly flush inside the throttle housing. I sawed off the tab on the VC to avoid interference with my heated grip cable.9398FE21-E946-4299-8B95-E775E1FE85C3.jpeg

this is the throttle cable housing, the VC, and the washer installed

I had to trim a bit of the rubber off of my grip flange so it releases properly.

I imagine this thing will be suuuper handy on longer trips.

tiny nitpicks and things I might do differently next time:
1. I would use a flat topped screw, countersunk into the VC to make it perfectly flush when I install this thing on my next bike
2. if I had room on the bar end I would shift my grip outwards to avoid having to trim the rubber flange

I always seem to need to trim the flange on the grip to get smooth action with the VC. I use mine often for things like just relaxing my hand or adjusting something on the right side. Easy on and off. Not that often I use it for long stretches. The Gen II bikes with CC are nice. I used the CC a lot when touring.

Another trick that works is to loosen your throttle housing and shove it into the hand guard. I did a 1051 mile ride like that in under 24 hours.
