Anyone have problems with fingers going numb in a 20 mile ride? Also looking at getting a seat so I can ride further than 70 miles. Have to get those two things fixed so I can go for a ride that is a ride.

Does it happen at all speeds? If not, it's probably a certain frequency at a certain rpm. On the other hand, a lot of guys use Grip Buddies.

Only other things I'd mention:

(1) May not apply, but relax your grip a little if you can. The only time I get numbness is when I've been white-knuckling it for a while. It's especially difficult (for me at least) to learn to loosen my grip when going offroad or on deep gravel, as the natural instinct is to clamp down hard for control.

(2) Do the seat-leveling mod, if you haven't already. So much more comfortable when you're not being pushed forward into the tank, which translates to being pushed into your handlebars, placing extra pressure on the carpal tunnel area of your hands = numbness.

(3) Might check that the front rim is true (not wobbling in any direction when spun), that the spokes are in-tact and torqued properly (6 Nm / 4.3 ft-lb), and that the tire is balanced / no flat spots or cupping. Any vibration in the wheel could obviously transfer into the grips to some extent.

This is my set up, 1) Grip puppies, 2) Cramp Buster, 3) Throttle lock, between all these I have eliminated numbness and hand fatigue, I hope this helps!

To Mrautoteacher: This set up will work fine, but is only needed on a Gen I. Gen II has cruise control, which eliminates the need. You didn't say which bike you have, so you will get all kinds of advise. . . . some of which just won't work.

Relax your hands and don't hold on so tight.

Then see if something needs to be done.
One the best and easyist mods i did to mine was put a Givi topbox backrest i had lying around on the junction where the seats meet. Its held in place with mini Rok Straps. It offers so much support. I can gas it as hard as i like and am not hanging on so not gripping tight.20200421_181432_HDR.jpg

You don't mention the age/mileage/service history of your S10. There are a few vibes around, but nothing significant, nothing that would give you trouble within 20 miles, so I wonder whether there are any other issues. Maybe the TBs out of sync, missing bar end weights or front wheel out of balance?

Grip puppies/buddies often help, as others have said, as does using cruise control where possible.

Numbness, biker's white finger or peripheral neuropathy can of course have other causes completely unrelated to the bike.

I recently just bought ity. 2013 with 11,500 miles. It does not have the handle bar weights., I dont think it is a tire balance issue, no wobble or shake. Whqt is the TBs out of sync?

Welcome to the forum. Please take a minute to add your location to your profile. It gives context to your posts and helps others give better answers to any questions you may have. Consider putting the year of your Super Ten in your sig line or profile too.

There may be nothing wrong with the bike, though the handle bar weights do seriously impact bar vibes. Maybe the previous owner had some kind of BarkBusters installed? Can you share a pic of the end of your bar. It is unusual for the weights to be missing. Do you have handguards?

Yamaha tends to put bars on that have a lot of 'sweep'. This means the bars are angled back toward the bike from what would be considered a strait line across the risers.

Sit on the bike and put your hands lightly on top of the grips w/o gripping the bars in a position that is natural for you. Do you have to rotate your wrists to then grip the bars?

On some bikes a small change in sweep can make a huge difference in comfort and eliminating numbness like that you describe. Something more neutral for you would help.

Grip buddies or puppies give you a large diameter grip and do absorb some vibes. A cheap thing to try before considering bar replacement. The cramp buster/throttle rocker allows you to use your palm to rotate the throttle so you don't have to grip the throttle as tightly. Again, an inexpensive thing to try. Some don't care for them, and it takes a little getting used to. If it's in the wrong position, it can lead to unexpected/unintended acceleration when going for the brake quickly. Most people adapt quickly to using it.

Seat - I'm going to guess you weight more than 150 lbs. A lot of riders over that find the stock seat to be a little soft. Combined with a new riding position, this can result in a sore butt.

What bike did you have before, or are accustomed to riding if you still have it? (I'm asking so we know what riding position you were used to.)

This is something you may simply get used to if your riding position has changed from the previous bike. You can spend a lot of money trying relatively inexpensive products like sheep skin covers, bead covers, AirHawk inflatable pads, Gel pads, etc. Or you can bite the bullet and spend a bunch of money once on a custom seat. Not an off the shelf aftermarket seat. That's really hit or miss and as expensive or more than a true custom seat. But a custom seat does not meet everyone's needs either.

How long do you want to be comfortable? An hour, two, or all day? That will help define your expectations and help others offer suggestions that better meet your needs.

For reference, the OEM bar end weights cost $13 each from PartShark and are:
End, Grip (L)
23P-26246-00-00

END, GRIP (R - Throttle side)
23P-26246-00-00

Another $10 for the collars and bolts.

You wouldn’t happen to be wearing gloves that are a little to tight ? If I wear gloves that are to tight it doesn’t take long at all and my right hand starts falling to sleep then the tingling starts, looser gloves solves that problem for me.

Get some bar end weights fitted asap. The TB sync is covered in a concurrent thread, so just follow the links ......... https://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/throttle-sync.28344/#post-407095

Come back to us on the seat issue, as others suggest. Give us an idea of your weight & expectations - I am 185 & find the OE seat fine for all day; others do not.

We all have different leg/arm ratios that affect comfort. You may find something like an airhawk will add some extra cushioning while you get the vibes issue sorted & get more accustomed to the new ride.

My hand started doing the same thing a couple of years ago. I went to the dr. Found out I have carpal tunnel. Ordered a McCruise and I'm good now.

Thanks for all the information. My first bike I bought was in 1977 and I have had dirt bike since then. 3 years ago I bought a 05 klr650 and thats the first bike I had plated and rode legally on the street. The bars have been changed and I do believe I will put the weights on first and go from there.
