Very Random Stall while downshifting 2nd to 1st

Hello,
Very randomly while coming to a stop and pulling in the clutch to down shift, my 2020 will stall. Happened this past weekend, had been riding back roads for about an hour so fully warmed up. This is the third time in the past 5 months or so it has happened. Seems to happen when downshifting from 2nd to 1st, if I recall correctly. 2000 miles on her. Thoughts? Thankfully starts right up again and doesn't do it for the rest of the ride.

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Yeah, they do that sometimes, especially when newer (<5000 miles). Adjusting the throttle body balance seems to help, and mine has also done it much less frequently since re-flashing the ECM.

Whilst I don't have the problem with my 2014 S10, I have experienced a similar issue on other bikes, both Yamaha & BMW.

My understanding is that, when cruising on a light throttle, the ECU leans back the fuelling, until it's barely sufficient to keep the bike running. Not a problem once the bike is well run in & loosened up, but my then young FJR caught me out once, stumbling badly just as I was executing a feet up full lock RH turn - over she went, no holding it, the fork angle serves to almost eject the rider; very embarrassing, but little damage thankfully.

The answer seems to be to blip the throttle as you change down, say coming up to a junction, which wakes up the fuelling & takes it out of any extreme eco mode. Perhaps others can explain more scientifically idc.

Yep, this ^

I also have 35 years of muscle memory that makes me blip the throttle to rev match when downshifting....damn thing would randomly stall on the blip as I rolled to a stop. Aggravating to say the least; reflash made that go away.

My Honda ST would do that before it got warmed up completely. Tech never was able to find the problem. By buddy's never did it; exact same bike.

Thanks guys for the responses, if it continues more frequently I will do an early TBS. I did have Anthony re-flash but it has happened both prior and post re-flash.

I do the same thing, I've found not to snap the throttle closed too fast when blipping, I've almost re-trained my muscle memory on this. The scariest time for me was when downshifting and blipping splitting between lanes (legal here). If the bike is moving I often just release the clutch and bump re-start. This time there must have been something gooey between the lanes as the rear tire locked up instead! Sent me slewing side to side a little. Not much room for that shit between cars at rush hour, especially with panniers fitted! Luckily I quickly pulled the clutch back in and hit the starter button. Nearly ruined a brand new pair of undies!

2k miles puts you squarely in the middle of new S10 growing pains. On my third one with just under 2k and it's been happening almost as if on queue just as it did with a 2012 and a 2014. Can't speak to other's experience with re-flashing, but I can tell you with certainty that just as the issue reared it's head it will also disappear.

It lasted longest on the 2014 with up to 18 of those stalls in one day. You may also find that turning while de-celling and/or riding it like a sports bike will increase the instances. When it stalls just pull in the clutch and tap the starter and move on. It will go away. Lubing your shifter pivot pivot will help if you're having any difficulty finding neutral or having any shifter anomalies.

Enjoy your new machine!

Yeah when you get a misfire on one of those 600cc bad boys, it’s like the world stops turning for an instant, waiting to see if the other cylinder fires

We knew that though, didn’t we? Amazing luck to get the only bike that wasn’t strangled by emissions….

Gents, I also had a similar issue while riding today. Stalling while coming up to a stop/turn. Did it at almost every slow/stop for the whole ride - probably 5 times in a 15 minute tube frame.

I did notice the other day after some winter maintenance that my back tire was still spinning slowly while on the center stand in neutral. Could this stalling be a sign of a worn clutch/bad fluid issue, making it stall with the clutch lever in?

Or do you think it's more of a throttle body sync/fueling issue?

Or vacuum?

Come to think of it, I've had a couple of instances of hard starting since the maintenance was all done too.

For reference:
Just did oil change, spark plugs, air filter clean/oil, and had ECU flash done by Two Wheel Dyno Works. Bike has 22k on the clock and maybe 100 miles since the maintenance was done.

Tire spinning is perfectly normal. It usually makes a hell of a racket when running on the center stand too, due to extreme angle of the u-joints. Not especially good for it........

With 22k miles it's a symptom of needing a throttle body sync.
Using some injector cleaner at high dosage for a while can't hurt. (SeaFoam, YamaLube, Berryman B12, or similar)
Be a good idea to also replace the spark plugs too, even though a bit early for the schedule.

As Hughes wrote, the tire spinning on the center stand is totally normal.

Both the '17 and the '21 (both with under 25,000kms) I've owned stall occasionally. At lights/ intersections etc. Annoying, but no big deal. Starts up straight away. Fueling? I've just accepted this as an idiosyncrasy of these bikes. Other owners?, or is it just me?

Yes unfortunately that pretty normal for the 1200 Tenere, if your a little extra careful it doesn’t happen, if your not careful it can happen very easily.
