After not riding for over a year I was a little apprehensive about striking ount on a 2000+ mile trip to the Smokey Mountains with the stock saddle. My FJR has a Rick Mayer seat and the thought of a stock saddle had my butt cringing and questioning my wisdom over the thought of this trip. I made a slight variation the mod that has been posted on this forum but I did so with pop in and out parts that would make it easy to change back and forth if needed.

I struck out with MarkJenn since he was picking his bike up from my store and also with a friend on his GS. After riding the better part of a week I started home while Mark and Jim went on to West Virginia. I rode the final day 785 miles and could have easily gone another 200-300 miles. Here is how I did essentially the same mod, but with factory parts............

The seat cushions are easily popped out and I didn't want to glue different ones in place so I used the seat cushions from a 2003 Roadstar 1600 which is approximately half the height of the stock S10 cushion. The Yamaha part # is 22W-24741-00-00 and they should be bought for a couple of dollars or so each.

Since I ride with the seat in the high position I only needed to put these in the middle.

I then drilled a hole into the reciever that the "tongue" of the saddle goes into and placed another cushion from the Roadstar in this hole from the bottom up to take up the slack of the rear seat drop.

Another view........

This is easily removed and the stock cushions can be placed back in with no hot glue to deal with removing.

If you use the low position you would just change out the rear-most cushions to get the drop and make the seat essentially flat.

Tony,

Nice follow up! So if I want to use the lower setting I would need to get 5 of the short spacers?

Very nice mod Tony. I will be doing this to my S10 as well. I like the extra cushion that you mounted in the reciever slot. Nice work ::003::

It appears to me that he used 3 for his mod and implies using 2 more in the rear to obtain a full flat, in other words yes, I count 5 total?????

Awesome Tony! I ride with the seat in the high position and have not done any mods to date.......this looks like the way to go for me.......

Great mod! Thanks for posting this including the partnumber. Just called my dealer and ordered them. I luv the neat OEM look of it and the ability to undo it without a trace. ::008::

but I note that if you want to run in the lower position the the hole to be drilled for the locater tab will have to be in the LOWER of the two rectangular receivers.
Given that these are not directly above one another this may necessitate the hole drilling at a slight angle

Excellent mod though

Agree. When I did my mod with the felt pads, I had to use a 3/8" thick piece of wood in the lower slot - wedged into place. I had thought about drilling a hole to use a screw to hold the wood, but didn't see a logical way to do it.

As a variation on this and when I wanted to see if I even liked the mod, I simply taped 5/16" thick rubber pieces to the bracket the bumpers normally sit on. There are no rubber bumpers on my seat.

The rubber pieces do have to be tall enough for the seat pan's ridges that the bumpers are normally just behind. (See top photo of seat pan with lotecredneck's bumpers installed)

The whole thing can be reversed without evidence this way. In the end, I did hot glue my bumpers to the bracket, not to the seat pan.

No, you would only need three of the cushions. You would put two of them in the rear most position and one in the metal reciever. If you can't drill the lower part of the reciever you could simply drill the tongue of the seat and place the cushion there. It would be offset, but it won't make any difference as all it does is hold the seat down which your butt will do as well! It will just keep the seat from feeling loose when off the bike and grabbing the seat.

Tony,
Do dealers normally have these pads in stock - or must they be special ordered? I do like this method better than the felt pads or other ideas. As for drilling the tab, I thought about that aaa well when I was working up the idea of the piece of wood in the lower slot. Like you say, need to drill off center since there is a structural rib right in the center of the tab.

Thanks!

Instead of drilling the hole at an angle for the lower position, one could instead drill vertically through both rectangular receivers at once...

I doubt they would have these in stock, but if you ask they may have a seat off of a V-Star 650, 1100 or Roadstar laying around they could rob them from. That is where I got mine. I will look and see if I have any seats in my warehouse. I know we used to have a pallet full of them from seat swaps to a custom seat. Any of the Star models have this cushion.

Give that man a cigar! That would be easy and then you could go between low and high. You would have to drill the reciever at an angle, but that is simple to do.

Or instead of at an angle, maybe drill the hole further back at the upper receiver, so the hole at the lower receiver is at the front...

P.s. I do not smoke but accept the cigar! ::003::

If you have to buy them they are less than $3 a piece. I just order 3 online and the price was less than $10 including shipping.

Even though I have not noticed a problem with the seat yet this is a clean mod. I just so happen to have a stock Road Sar seat on a shelve in my garage. Traded a Roady for the S-10.
Tony is a great guy to deal with. I remember going to an ISRA ralley years ago in Hot Springs when he had a dealership there as well as the one in Texas. Anyway we raod my wifes bike in to see if they had a rear tire that would fit. They had it and were giving discounts for the event. Less than an hour later we were back on the road.
