https://thetenerist.wordpress.com/ check this link. it's a gold mine of info on valve adustment and lots of other stuff. With good pictures. FWIW mine were in spec at 26k. I'm way past 2nd check and ain't worrying about it unless I get some starting problems.
I recently had my valves checked ( see link below for more info ) at 45.000 miles...all eight valves were tight, timming chain was also needing replacement, the tensioner was already on the limit....

My bike started fine when cold, when hot....don't take that for granted.

Hope your mechanic ain't hosing you down. That's mighty early for a gen2 cam chains and tensioner.

Feedback from other local guys who have the same bike, on this particular shop and mechanic, is really good...and the fact is the bike now runs much better....has lower fuel consumption, better throttle response and much less engine noise. I guess according to use and maintenance, not all things will work well for the same amount of time. Anyway, it had missed the 1st valve check, was near the 2nd one....and a camchain is cheap for the peace of mind you get. Tensioner was OK, it was the camchain that already had too much slack and i could hear it rattle inside on acceleration and specially in low speed decceleration.

My 2014 has 84,200 miles on it as of today. I just had my third valve check completed. I don't do it myself; it's the one maintenance task that I've farmed out to a shop in the seven years I've owned the bike.

The first valve check was back in Feb 2017 at 31,608 miles. I was told everything was in spec, but I didn’t ask them back then what the clearances actually were.

The next was in March 2019 at 55,257 miles. This time I asked them to write down the clearances. Everything was in spec, and the clearances were:

Left Exhaust: .009 .009 Left Intake: .004 .005
Right Exhaust: .009 .009 Right Intake .005 .005

The most recent was September 2021 at 84,146 miles. All of the valve clearances were unchanged from the previous check.

I average about 12,000 miles a year, so I do ride a fair amount. I don't use any super special oil; over the years it's been a mix of Yamalube, Rotella T4, O'Reilly Auto's house brand, and Castrol Go 4T. I'm pretty consistent at using 93 octane fuel, but rarely do I get ethanol free. I've used Lucas Oil and Seafoam a total of one time each over the life of the bike.

The clearance check ran me $392.00, but that also included the installation of a new cam chain tensioner. There wasn't anything wrong with my old one, but I decided to have it replaced based on its mileage. it was replaced with the newest OEM version, with the part number 2BS-12210-01.

I've ask 3 shops what the cost is for valve checks. They don't give a "check price" and a actual adjustment price. Prices from 2 of them $570-$564- One shop said plus any gaskets.

I've only been to two different shops for my three valve checks (choices for Yamaha work are really limited in my area), so it's not really a representative sample of all shops, but both gave me a ballpark figure before they did the job. The final price at both shops was very close to that number. They also gave me a ballpark price if they actually had to make any adjustments. If I recall correctly, the ballpark figure included the various replacement gaskets that were needed for the job.

I should have mentioned that at both places, I bought the necessary gaskets for the valve check well in advance of them doing the work. I looked up the procedure for a valve check in the service manual and bought the parts that the manual said needed to be replaced. The shop I went to for the last two checks can only place a parts order with Yamaha when they reach a predetermined dollar amount, so the job can end up taking a week or more if they have to order the parts after you drop your bike off. I believe that at the second check I bought the parts in advance from the shop itself, but on this most recent check I bought them online from Rocky Mountain ATV. I don't remember how I handled it at the first valve check. The shop didn't have any issues using parts that I provided.

For the valve check, I bought three different gaskets, as follows:

Gasket, Crankcase Cover 2 OEM Part Number 23P-15461-00 Rocky Mountain price $18.71 RMATV Part No 131204023384
Gasket, Head Cover 1 OEM Part Number 23P-11393-00 Rocky Mountain price $22.81 RMATV Part No 131204023395
Gasket, Breather Cover OEM Part Number 23P-11169-00 Rocky Mountain price $ 1.98 RMATV Part No 131204040601

I did ask about valve shims, just in case any valves needed adjustment, and whether they recommended that I buy any shims in advance. The shop said it wasn't necessary, that they kept various size shims in their inventory. I don't know the price on individual shims.

I went back and looked at my invoice from the most recent job, and the actual valve clearance check (excluding the installation of the new cam chain tensioner) cost $280.00. The shop charges $80.00 per hour in labor.

Hope this provides some useful information for anyone looking into having this procedure done.
