I live in Denver area and the dealer quote on valve service was very high. What is the an acceptable charge for this service. Does anyone know an independent in the Denver area? You always hear that the valves were fine when checked so would going to 50k be risky?

Had them checked on my previous 2013 at 30,000 smiles, they were all still in spec, he also changed antifreeze, spark plugs and brake fluid. Charged me $500. Was going to have him do it all again this winter at about 52,000 smiles but I wound up trading for a new 2018 in order to get cruise control.

Hi 2talltoo!
I’m going to the firts valves check tomorow.
I’ve just bought the bike last december at 51 400km. Now he’s at 55....km and runs like a new or like intended!
So will see if the valves need adjustement.
The dealer (5stars Yam) quote 4h just to check and 6h if they need to adjust.

Yamaha dealers are dropping like flies around here! I'm in Broomfield and had great service from CO Powersports in Thornton (closed a couple years ago) and followed the service guys to Geforce Powersports in Boulder (also recently closed). There was a rumor they were going to relocate the Boulder store to Dacono area but I'm not aware that's actually happening.
Sorry, that's a long way of saying I got nothing.

I had a VERY GOOD experience with Apex Motorsports in Colorado Springs, although my recollection is that they are a multi line dealership. I needed a new tire on a trip. They lent me tools to remove my wheel in their parking lot. Family owned for over 60 years, and very knowledgeable staff, was my impression. Having said that, I don't think you are in any danger of going 50K miles without a valve adjustment.

WOW! Co powersports closed?? Thats where i got my ST. Nice sales people, did NOT trust their service dept. , had a good reason not to. Vickerys has a decent service dept. heard it from few people.

Thanks for the responses. I'm currently at 16K but I'm doing the Arrow header and AC tune on ECU so it gets you looking at other service. I left the BMW world for S10 and have been intrigued with Yamaha and happy. I have less money in the S10 then I lost in depreciation on the BMW in 2 years and 27,000 miles.

The clearance check and shim swap is a bear of a job on the S10 (I did it myself), expect to be quoted many hours (that 4/6hr quoted above is about right). If they quote cheap, consider that they may not know what they are doing or will not bother.

I have never personally dealt with the service dept at Vickery, but I've heard good things about them.
I do deal with their parts dept from time to time.

A good shop will charge you $300-$450 for the 26k mile valve check/adjust, depending on if they have to re-shim or not. If no re-shim, only a valve cover gasket and one other. I just paid $300 for that work recently in AL. In UT it used to cost me $435 or so, with shim changes. On the '12 I skipped the first interval and did it at 52k. All exhuast valves were right on the edge of spec, running tight. On the '15 that I just had done, I had it checked at 28k and they were all nicely in the middle of spec still. YMMV. At 16k, you don't need to do this work. The header and ECU flash won't have any impact on the valve train.

Why they will not use another type of simpler dumper, where it is not necessary to disassemble the entire cam shaft to change a pill that is under the dumper. if the pill was up, with a simple tool the plunger would sink and the pill would be changed. Yeah ... I know ... I'm talking stupid things:):)

That's just silly. Next you will be talking about Hydraulic Lash Adjusters in bikes! ;)

The problem with those shim over bucket designs is the chance of spitting a shim out at high RPM wreaking mechanical havoc!

While otherwise correct, there's one glaring error in that blurb. Spitting out a shim will not eliminate clearance, rather it will cause an increase in clearance summing whatever clearance was there before the shim departed, and the thickness of the shim itself. This will result in the valve not opening as far as normal and likely heavy damage to the cam lobe, and the bucket follower at the minimum.

You know what I get out of all of this? There are very few good reasons to intentionally red-line or over-rev your engine. Bikes like this reach good torque levels at lower RPMs to make them more useable at lower speeds. Keep your shift points and your RPMs reasonable. Give your bike a chance to lubricate and warm-up on start-up before riding it hard. Buy appropriately-rated engine oil and change it and your filter regularly.

I'd maybe do the first recommended valve check on schedule. If the valves are all in spec, I might double the next service interval. Once you've developed a pattern, you can better estimate what's good for your bike.

Did they quote (or can they) on price for check vs price for reshim?

in the 80s, this type of tapper was used, but the engines were rotating 8000rpm, today at 13000 rpm, it is likely that it will not reach out that the cam will hit it again and again and again

I appreciate the information. My quote was a year ago on my first S10 and was closer to $1,000 so I did not ask for much info. That was at Grand Prix MS more of an Indian dealer. That helped my decide to buy a Gen. 2 S10 which I really like.
