Goodmorning everybody!

Does anybody now if there is any difference between Gen1 and Gen2 when checking the valves?

I have decided that upcoming week is going to be the week that the beast will finally get her first valve check after 60.000km. I have a service manual for the first gen but not the second. These are impossible to find and very expensive!

This has probably been covered before but i was not able to find a answer....

Greetings from the Netherlands!

If they are the same. There is a detailed instruction on this site. You have to scroll thru about 5 or 6 pages to get to the Tenere valve adjustment though. I hope it helps. https://thetenerist.wordpress.com/page/10/
Thank you! I have read through all of this. I am sort of scared for this job but i also like a little bit of a challenge. Zen and the art of motorcycle maintenance comes to mind.

I have done the valve check/adjustment several times on both Gen1 and Gen 2 bikes and don't recall any significant difference.
In the Valve Clearance and Adjustment section of this forum, there is a link to an excellent recent YouTube video that details the process.
(https://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?threads/valve-clearance-and-adjustment.28825/). Highly recommended.

Sure, I might do a few things differently, such as remove the gas tank to get it out of the way and not bother to measure the cam lobes, but I found it right on the point with many useful tips that I had to learn by doing. It's tedious in a couple of places, such as reinstalling the valve cover with the gaskets in the right places, but not difficult. Do remove the front motor mount and swing the electrical panel back so you can see what you're doing. Also mark the electrical connectors as you remove them so they go back in the right places. Take your time and get it right. As the video says at the start, If you don't feel comfortable with it you should take it to a trusted mechanic.

Thank you! I have checked the video and i am pretty sure that i can do this without completely destroying my top-end. Fingers crossed!

I did it! Valve adjustment done! I took me a whole day to do but the bike is running great and nothing exploded. It wasn't an easy job by any means but it's no rocket science either.

I think being in the right state of mind is key. No distractions, no plans, no deadline or anything else that could make you hurry. Taking it slow and patiently made it even a satisfying job. All the exhaust valves were tight. between 0,18 and 0,17 for all four. All the intakes where between 0,10 and 0,13. Changed them all out to the loose end of the spectrum. So all EX are around 0,26 and all the IN around 0,15.

The CCT was really easy to do. I thought that after reading all the stories that i was going to be horrific. Just using the vice and a certain motion and it went in in a couple of seconds. Spin then press, spin then press.

The valve cover was also not that hard to get in or out. Just get everything you can out of the way. Preperation is key. It went in on the first try without disturbing the gasket or making a mess.

Did a TBS afterwards because this was pretty off after adjusting the valves.

I will probably skip the next one.

Thanks for all the help guys!

How many shims were you able to move around and reuse vs new shims? Shim kit?
