Only if you crash/tip over. I have The full Rumbux system and am glad it's the full system.

I have the Atlrider lowers and opted not to get the uppers because you cannot remove the side black panels covering rhe radiator/battery with the upper portions installed. Lowers work fine for simple crash protection.

Yes, you can remove both covers on the battery side of the bike with the uppers. In fact you can remove and replace the battery with the upper bars in place. On the radiator side you can easily get to your radiator cap, not much else under that side. I bought the uppers because I like the looks, they may offer a little more protection and they give me a place to mount driving lights. Do a search for more discussion and some pictures on this topic.

Thanks guys. Magic, I think you helped make my decision...I also plan on using them to mount lights. I do plan on going off road, so between the light mounts and off road protection it's easier to add now than later. I guess buy once cry once. Great feedback

Good to know you can in fact remove them! Maybe I will get the uppers now too...

The biggest reason for the upper bars is to protect the fan. A number of folks without the left bar have had the fan push into the radiator.

The black side covers are removable but it is a bit of a pain.

I did not even consider not running the uppers. I know it adds weight but I want the most protection as possible.

I think the upper bar is just added weight, expense. I have run the Altrider lowers since I bought my S10 in 2014. I ride predominately off road, on some very technical terrain I have dropped my bike more times than I can count, on sand, rocks, in mud, at speed, at a stand still and everywhere in between, the bars have not bent and done there job every time.

I recently bought the Yamaha crash bars and cut off the top bar mounts and used PIAA lamps and added hyway pegs to lower bars.

Thanks for the replies. Good info. I decided to go the route of uppers and lowers. I will get them installed once I finish my wiring work.

I got the lowers only. Didn't want to add weight up high and while they provide a place to mount driving lights, they also eliminate the spot that Yamaha provides for driving lights.

The uppers are perfect for mounting a Aurora 10" light bar. A must have for spotting abundant wildlife here in Australia at night.

All the fairings are removable with them on.

I don't think the upper bars will come close to the ground unless the bike does somersaults. Here are the pics of the bike on its sides with the lowers only. Radiator looks well protected.

the photos don't represent a true tip over. The ground is never going to be level. I have tipped over multiple times and the bars don't always protect the pegs, side cases, passenger pegs or the handle bars. just fyi
