I am not trying to look for car drivers using phones (too busy trying to avoid the dozy f*****s) but still spot 5-10 every day, many appear to be texting / sending e-mails / playing games rather than just holding it to the ear to chat.

We have hardly any traffic cops left due to budget cuts, they would only need to catch 3-4 of these drivers a day to pay for another Police bike on the roads - and I could catch 3-4 in 15 minutes if I was trying

I absolutely could not agree more....drivers using mobiles whilst driving are nothing short of an accident looking for somewhere to happen, its a pet hate of mine >:D

While I totally despise people who text and drive, that guy was just sitting at the light (purely based on the video). Who's to say he didn't just pick up his phone while waiting for the light to turn green and once the light changes he would have put the phone down?

Doesn't matter. Unless you're parked, (stopped at a light doesn't count), you're in control of a vehicle.

It's a technicality that falls within the scope of a traffic infringement, at least in the UK, Aus and most of Europe. I have seen cars 'creep' when the driver is sat at lights texting. Not a huge problem in Europe but in the US, where most cars are auto this can present as an issue. Imagine if you will, you are sat at a red light minding you own business, the driver of the car behind is texting or something with the phone, he/she perceives the lights have changed because they spot movement in their peripheral vision and to keep up with traffic they hit the gas thinking traffic is on the move, only it isn't, now you are. Earthward bound if you are lucky or mashed to a mound of flesh that is barely recognizable as human ( ok, hyperbole, for dramatic effect). If you have to talk on the phone, Bluetooth is the way, or it will wait, no-one is that important that they need to be in contact constantly, and if they were they would have a driver.

Many do it when the traffic is heavy, I see loads as I am filtering, they think it is "safe" as they are going slow, I often see cars veer out of my way to let me past - but I now have to be very careful as it is hard to tell if the car is moving over to let me get through, or just drifting because the driver is using their phone, in which case it could just as easily drift back as I am alongside.

I have to admit if the traffic is at a dead stop I may send a quick text saying I am stuck in traffic - but I make sure I am stopped and the second I move the phone gets put away, I also understand I could get busted for this and would not argue if caught (My fault for not spotting PC Plod in the first place)

Having just spent 2 weeks touring in Europe on my trusty FJR, the problem has spread just about everywhere. Even the illegal migrants that haunt some cities in Italy all seem to have a mobi & new trainers, even when they don't appear to have a pot to pi** in.

It has to be said that the mobile phone, since G3, has so absorbed the human psychy, that it has created a huge set of obsessive-compulsive individuals. I understand most users check their phone over 100 times each day, to address their Inbox anxiety & may even be suffering from FOBO - Fear of being Offline. When my wife had a spell on crutches recently, did other pedestrians help by holding doors & making space on pavements - no, they were too busy to notice & would simply walk straight into her, such was the life & death importance of their phone/social media.

The result is what we all witness on every ride/drive/walk. On the other hand, we have been cutting Traffic Police, along with many public services to the bone. The Aussies are known for trying to take a hard line, but elsewhere enforcement is patchy. Personally I am sick & tired of these idiots - it used to be watching for drunks, then it was loading the CD, then SatNavs, now it's smart phones. But then again many of us have media connections in our helmets, which must absorb our powers of concentration too. There is no easy solution - we have to find a way to stop these devices controlling our lives first. They are a useful tool that is causing universal OCD.

Meantime, & it will be a very long time, ride safe ..................... KEN ::002::

Traffic enforcement has zero to do with public safety, and everything to do with filling the governments coffers.
Further as a professional driver I see people not only texting, but combing their hair, shaving, and even reading the morning paper.
Statistically distracted driving in general is the leading cause of traffic accidents with rubber necking being number one now followed by cell phone use.
Overall I find it difficult to stomach that simply because you wear a uniform you can somehow magically use a computer, talk on a radio, and your cell phone with none of it inhibiting the officer, while any citizen is automatically a threat to everyones safety.
BTW, Traffic accidents are the leading cause of officer injuries/fatalities.
In the end if someone is showing reckless driving, which is proving that you ar a threat to society, they should be pulled over and heavily fined, until then it is merely subjective BS.
If you really want to stop distracted driving up the ante for actual penalties regarding an accident, loss of driving rights for your entire life, prison etc.
