I broke down and bought a Shoei Neotech II because all the reviews say how quiet it is. I'm leaving for a trip on Saturday and wanted a quiet helmet. So far I can say that I don't think it is much quieter than the other helmets I have owned. HJC, LS2, and Bell. The build quality is far superior to those brands. It is very comfortable as well.

I don't think that I've ever noticed one of my helmets being quieter than the others. Build quality, obviously, is very important, but comfort is just as important. You could have the best helmet in the world. If it's not comfortable, you're not going to wear it.

I alternate between two Shoei: Qwest and X2.

The Qwest with the round shape fits me perfectly. The X2 is a little more oval than I like, but I chose one size larger and effectively customized the interior with a larger center pad. So now it fits almost as well as the Qwest but has the wonderful sun-shading visor.

Plus I like the X2 ADV styling and feeling of openness those type helmets offer because of the chin bar shape.

Two things I don't like about my Neotec II. The ventilation isn't that good compared to my Neotec I and the first face shield detent is too high. The Neotech I allowed me to crack it open about a half inch, the II is about an inch high.

I agree on both points, the top vent judt leaves a cold spot on the top of your head and the front vent doesn't allow enough air in. I'd also like to be able to crack the visor open about half the distance the minimum currently allows.

Those points aside I love the lid, very comfortable.

Yeah, I've got no complaints about the fit or quality. But it gets hot and humid where I am so the ventilation is an issue. I'm currently looking for a summer lid.

"I" think a helmet like Chris's (Post #66) is what I would go for in your place. Looks like a ton of air flow, with decent protection.

My little pea brain had to read that several times. It automatically translated it into proper English without any hesitation. :D

Anyone had any direct experience with the Shark Evo 2 or 3 flip up lids? I tried an early version on in a shop a few years backs and the flip mechanism felt a bit crude and I suspected it was going to be a tad fragile, so gave it a miss.

Anyone know if the newer versions have improved?

That post caught my attention, but it turns out that's an enduro/mx helmet. It'd definitely be super cool but I don't like riding the street with goggles on. Need a face shield and preferably an internal sun visor so now looking at the Airoh On-Off Commander.

Over the years I’ve had 4 or 5 XD’s and my only complaint is I wish the faceshield was much easier to remove or re install

A shoei GT AIR, with british flag on top (could not find the right picture), comfortable, with sun shield integrated, pretty good, expensive.
CONS : anti fog inside does not work that much
I have the same, with Union JAck on it. Bought it when I rode my triumph Tiger 800, pretty good helmet, except for ventilation, it doesn't almost does not work.

I have a Shoei GT Air 2 and even with the taller windscreen I get a ton of air flow to the top vent.
It's a bit noisy for being a Shoei, but I wear ear plugs so it's not a big deal.

What's archaic about the design now that was fine 5 years ago?
It's only taken me a year to notice this question.

In my opinion I want them to get rid of the cloth in the low side of the helmet. It gets trapped by the Velcro of a Klim Lattitude jacket (1st gen), and also by the Velcro on my Helite vest. Doesn't take all that long to end up looking like this.

A modern helmet should have cutouts for speakers. XD4 does not.

An internal visor would be nice, but I've been told that will never happen.

When I wrote the original post a year ago I wanted to wait for an update. Finally last month I gave up and bought another XD4. Didn't want to, but I could find only 3 possible helmets that had a useful peak. I use my XD4 peak all the time as a sun blocker in the early morning or riding into the sunset. I checked out the Klim and Schuberth alternatives, but they were not good fits for me. All other "adventure" style helmets appear to think a peak is a decoration.

For some reason this new XD4 is taking me longer to break in than my first two XDs. I'm thinking way too much about the comfort of the helmet after a while. Still have some spoon work to do I guess. Due to this, I'll take that ripped up XD shown above with me on the BDR ride later this month. It's beat to crap, but it doesn't cause me any discomfort.
