I got a clunking in the front of my drive shaft. I'm guessing a u joint of some kind in there. Anybody ever have that kind of issue? The bike has 57000 miles 2015

You should be able to see the u joint and determine if it has failed. Remove the metal guard and pull the rubber boot forward until you see the u joint cross. Rotate the rear wheel slowly and watch the cross, if you see play in the bearings (or metal cuttings) then you need a new driveshaft.

Actually I put it on the centerstand and idled it in gear. Not so much to hear in 1st butbthe higher I got the worse it sounded. Sounds like its coming from the transmission. Here is a short video of it idling in 6th

The noise on the center stand , in gear is normal.

Sounds horrible, but normal. The reason is to long to type on the phone. Your good.

Running the rear wheel while parked on the center-stand is not a good idea because the universal joint is at maximum angle so that’s possibly what’s causing your rattling

oops I see Tobasco already answered your question

It's not normal on this bike. I can feel it clicking while riding. It started yesterday. I know that video sucks but I can feel when I put my hand on the gearbox. It's worse going around turns like clover leafa and at slower speeds. At first I thought it was a beat spoke clicking on the brake stay

Anyone know of the cover above the shifter can come off without draining the oil? The top u joint is fine. It's an internal noise. Yst server won't let me put a picture

You can pull that side cover off and the oil should be below it. Does this happen in all gears while riding ?

You might want to pull the rear Diff & shaft out and take a look at that. On the center stand that’s pretty normal sound. While riding is not normal. But need more info. Everyone here would be happy to help if we can.

I'm guessing it's a low speed thing, the UJ spider not running central to the driveshaft, but clears once up to speed - common with an older GS, not so often seen with an S10. Running the bike in gear on the centre stand is just about the worst treatment you can give the UJ, as others mention.

https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5944980/xt1200z-super-tenere/drive-shaft - see part #45 & associated bearings.

I wouldn't be looking in the drive housing at this stage; just pull the driveshaft, examine the UJ bearings & hope they are just dry & need re-packing, if you are feeling very lucky.

The rubbing/clunking sound comes from inside in front of the u joint.
I looked at it while turning the wheel by hand and the u joint looks fine.

Yes your additional information does make it sound like possibly there is something wrong with it.
Could you possibly take a different S10 for a test ride just to compare ?

I took off the crankcase cover but nothing to see in there. It looks good and I can't spin the wheel fast enough by hand to hear anything and I can't start it because oil leaks out

Appears to be the outside right rear bearing, that same bearing also failed on my 2013 Tenere at 45,000 miles. I spent a week in a motel waiting to get that bearing, actually replaced all three bearings but the only one that I’ve ever heard of failing was the right one. After that experience I started carrying a complete set of rear bearings .
