Am I missing something?
I ride in Touring mode most of the time, occasionally sport mode.
I'm having difficulty switching from sport back to touring.
It's just too jumpy in sports mode to ride in congested traffic. The Ten's performance is roughly equal to the Africa twin. However, the Tenere is a far better highway cruiser.
I had to stop the bike (2018 ES) to go back to the touring mode.
I don't recall any restrictions for changing the modes.
???? Thanks

On mine you have to let off the throttle for it to switch.

Mine has been switching back to touring mode after the key being turned off. Random times. Has me scratching my head.

Since I NEVER use "T", the best that I can remember, is that you just have to be off of the throttle to switch modes; not stopped. "S" requires next to no wrist movement to go from on the gas, to off. As a matter of fact, when I'm just out rolling around, I hardly use the clutch. I just preload the shifter, back of the throttle, shift; smooth as silk.

Hmmmm, I think I did ask the forum a while ago if it reverted to touring mode when the key is switched off. Someone said no it remains in the last mode selected.
I'm confused

As long as you're completely off the throttle it'll switch between modes. Only time I had an issue on my '12 was during a hi-idle event, there wasn't any switching going on then. Mine also stays in the mode it was stopped in, haven't seen any switching on shut-down.

FJR does the same thing...shut-off in Tour/Sport and it restarts with same setting.

I can shift mine smooth with no clutch too. I've been doin it for years. Before I had it flashed It was harder for me to do.. If you can do it really smooth. Its probably ok. If you're not smooth it can be really rough on the gears. I've seen a bunch of dirt bikes with tore up transmissions from jamming gears with no clutch.

Keep in mind that the mode switch slide to the left to select. If you push the mode switch in, (like the turn signal switch to cancel), it does nothing in terms of changing modes, but sometimes breaks off a small piece of plastic which can cause problems inside the switch at times.

Otherwise, Nikolajsen nailed it.

I was just going to say there's a discussion elsewhere about the mode switch randomly switching modes with that broken bit rattling around in there. The consensus was that folks press that button instead of the starter and break it, or press it instead of sliding it. Either way there was a fair number of folks posting up about the broken bit inside and random S&T selections.

I am pretty sure you need to pull the clutch to switch between modes.
And I am in the camp of using T most of the time since S is too snatchy for me in 1st and 2nd. I think if I got a flash I would want S have the same characteristic in 1st and 2nd as T-mode, and the same engine braking. I love that I can ride this bike hardly using my brakes

I have the broken switch. With mine, if I push up or down or in or even to the right if I am off the gas it will switch between modes. Sometimes it switches by itself, I assume going over a bump or something like that. My workaround to not having it randomly switch on it's own is to stay on the gas. I never need the clutch.

Perhaps this changed at some point? My US 2012 and US 2015 Super Tens both only require a closed throttle, as far as I understand. I sometimes want to change it when I am moving and realize it's not the mode I want. In those cases I likely have the clutch pulled in to facilitate closed throttle w/o altering my speed. So, Hmmm.

I think my mode switch is good, because with the engine not running, I can easily change between Touring and Sport modes without any problems.
I've noticed that when riding to get it to change modes I have have to hold the mold switch for about one second.
I'll check my owner's manual again

Ok, The owners manual says,
The throttle MUST BE CLOSED to switch between modes, nothing to do with the clutch, but the cruise control must be off also.

Not OFF, just disengaged. Which, when you roll off of the throttle, happens automatically. (or tap a brake)
Agree with you Sierra 1, cruise control can be armed, but not engaged.
The owners manual is rather limited.
Thanks for pointing this out.
