This is what I have in a tool tube on the bike all the time:

It packs down to this:

And it all stores here:

And here:

And here:

I've actually had to use tools to do some roadside repairs and maintenance. I've changed the oil in a parking lot in Colorado Springs. I had to remove my crash bars so I could change a battery in Galax, VA. I needed the jumper cables on that same trip. I've had to repair three flat tires so far. I've had to replace headlight bulbs (hence the spare bulb box in the tool tube).

Carry the tools that align with the tasks that you feel comfortable doing. The most likely thing you'll probably encounter is a flat tire, so a plug kit and a tire inflator are a good idea. I'd also carry the tools to remove a wheel: if tire damage is too severe to repair with a plug, you could at least remove the wheel and catch a ride to a motorcycle shop for a new tire, without having to wait around for someone to come tow your bike.

All my tools are stored on the bike itself, with the exception of the jumper cables that I keep in a crash bar bag. That way they don't take up valuable space in the panniers during a trip, and I can also take the panniers off if I want to and still have the tools.

My tool kit is probably overkill for most, but it's come in handy for me.

I keep a pretty similar set of tools on my bike. Probably the only thing to add is:

- a tube of metal epoxy putty
- loctite
- crimp connectors and wire for electrical repairs

I store mine under the seat and in a givi toolbox attached to pannier frames.

RC is always the over-achiever in the group.

The tools I carry are for doing adjustment and minor road side crash repairs after a drop or spill.
Actual motorcycle failure, I carry nothing for that. Simply tools are useless with parts but doing control adjustments and tweaking racking or tying chit back on is common. On pavement I have never dropped the bike but off road is another story.
So your basic 10,12,14,17mm wrenches, allen wrench for panel access. slip lock plier, slotted and philip screw driver, compressor, powerpack for boosting.
More importantly, mechanics wire, zap ties, gorilla tape, electrical tape, JB weld, tire plugs, fuses, loctite.
I'm sure I'm missing a couple in there but over all I don't carry much.
BUT the most #1 thing I carry is a CREDIT card and Road side assistant membership
