I was watching that race and saw that happen at the time. The wheel actually failed with the hub separating from the rim. There's another series of photos showing the spoke(s) starting to break and then the wheel completely fails. The bike was a Ducati with a single sided swing arm, so once the wheel separated from the hub, it was free to roll away. The rider was not badly hurt as I recall.

Judging by the landing gear I do not think that is a Hawker Hurricane.
That pilot(?) is also wearing a US Army Air Forces "crush cap" and that is either a US military Harley or Indian.
Time to research....

The weird little chin scoop is what I was going on. The landing gear is off. Might not be his plane.
