Thank all of you for some sound advice. I have ridden heavy cruisers, mostly harleys several hundred thousand miles but am a newbe on the s10. At 69 years of age I need all the help I can get. I do rodeo competitions on my harley popo roadking and do very well, especially for my age. I have found that my slow speed skills help some on the yamaha but I still have much to learn. My biggest concern on the dalton is the slippery mud and calcium that I have read so much about. At my age I dont mind going slow. I will be leaving the last week of June and should be in AK by July 4 headed north. thanks again, Lonslo

So on the topic of going slow (and being on ST as I don't do rodeos). If you feel like you really need to move slow, like on a stream crossing or a slow up hill with a fair amount of rocks.

Rev that 1200cc to 2800 or 3500 RPMs and use your clutch to control your speed. Feather that shit out of it, it is a wear item. You dont want to be in a full dump of your engine brake and need some vroom-vroom to get over a rock and carry momentum. Most often, I see people try to gas it out and 1 of 2 things happens: Stall the bike or it revs up and gets away from you. Of course the getting away is revenant to the current TCS setting.

Practice at home on some wet grass, uphill. Go as slow as you can but keeping moving FWD.
