I'm headed West in April and am looking for a place to get my tires changed in NM/AZ. Either order a set and have them shipped to a mechanic or get from the mechanic/dealer.

Any recommendations for a Tenere friendly place?

I usually pop my wheels off myself and take them to Cycle Gear to change. Here in the Phoenix metro area, we have 3 stores with a 4th one opening up soon.

Wonder if I'd be allowed to take the wheels off in their lot?

Do they just mount and balance or will they take the wheels off as well?

I know the Phoenix store has a dedicated lot, where removing the wheels shouldn't be an issue. They don't do the wheel removal themselves.

Small one man shop that does nothing but motorcycle tires...Good service, good prices and good people (person).

Cycle gear has installed tires backwards on my wheels in AZ, and here in ABQ, the cycle gear scarred my rims.
I have plenty of room in my garage for you to pull your wheels, and a truck available to take them to the shop of your choice.
for mounting and balancing, my choices would be:
Santa Fe BMW: Make appt, good quality work, about $30 a wheel off the bike.
Moto Authority: get you in no appt, decent work, I have had a few bad balance jobs here, but they've never scarred my rims, and have good customer service, IMO. About $35 a wheel off the bike
Bobby J's: I've had bad experiences with this shop, will not take my bike there again...

Bart,
I have had a few things worked on at Bobby J's what issues did you have and who do you go to and get work done?
I prefer the independent shops SMR has been around going on close to 20 years and I have never had an issue other than one and it was minor by one of his seasonal mechanics.
Jason the owner hooked me up on the next time I came in and the mechanic was let go.
He seriously doesn't like any mistakes happening to his customers motorcycles as he sees it, a motorcycle has two wheels in a car if something go's wrong like a break locking up you can manage to coast or pull off the road on a bike it could be catastrophic.

Sounds like several viable options. My trip is planned to start the week of 4/18. I plan to pass through and do the tire change on my way to Springdale, UT and will be back in the Silver City area for an event at the beginning of May.

Thanks for the offer Bart. I'll be in touch if I decide to go that route.

Did you ever get the shelf installed Pete? Might have to swing by and check it out. I also want to check out the camping at Oliver Lee at some point.

Ramsey,

I was rear ended about 2 years ago, in a construction zone here in "Burque and went down soft on my right side.
Bobby J's did the Estimate. They never checked the rear wheel for damage, and when I confronted them about it, they became defensive.
I ended up getting a new wheel from Davis Service center in Montrose, CO. (They were one of the sponsers for the Ouray tenere rally)
Bobby J's has asked me not to go there any more, my business is not welcome...

I do ALL my own work now if possible.
