Thanks for all the feedback on the cause of the cold startup noise. I have ordered the CCT. The next question is do I also need to replace the timing chain and sprocket? The bike has 121000 kms (75,000 miles) on it.

Anyplace in the Yamaha service manual where they talk about replacing the timing chain, they say to replace the chain, cam sprockets, and crankshaft as a set. They clearly do not expect the chain to wear out without messing up the other components.

I replaced my cam chain at 100,000 km when I changed the tensioner. Did not really need to but it’s cheap to buy and easy to replace when you are that far in. It was slightly stretched no wear observed on the sprockets.

Im about to replace one on a friends bike with 120K miles. The sprockets still look 'new' but as someone said, the chain is cheep. He is looking to put 250K ++ miles so why not.

In your case, probably not necessary unless you just want to....

I recently changed my chain sprocket at 100K Miles, I was feeling a weird sound coming while driving, so as my friend suggests I changed it.

Shouldn't the chain guide also be replaced? Seems like wear on the plastic slider part would mimic or add to apparent chain wear/stretch by taking up more adjustment from the tensioner.

From what Ive witnessed over the years, there doesn't seem to be much wear on any of the three guides unless something is very wrong. The only thing I don't know this second, is if they are pinned into the case or are they hanging type. If they are pinned in the case, I would say NO.. if they are the hanging type then it would be really easy while the motor was torn down.
