Just after I put my bike away for the winter, I was inspecting the rear tire. "Hmm, not quite down to the wear bars, but almost. WAIT A MINUTE! WHAT'S THIS!!!" Time to change the tire. Heidenau K76 with about 14,000km ( 8700 mi), on it. Have a Shinko E705 waiting in the wings.

Seems to be a fairly common problem. Over the last 10yrs or so I've seen quite a few similar mentioned on forums on different brand tires. Not a cut, but a crack.
One guy on a goldwing some years back had similar looking cracks, a bunch of them, on a rear tire. Can't remember the brand, but when he contacted the company asking about what happened, they said the tires got too cold. I guess they expect you bring your goldwing in your bedroom all winter so the tires stay all nice and supple for next year.

My garage, (which is below 2 bedrooms in my house), in Victoria, BC gets really cold in the winter. Yeah, right.

Makes sense. I've seen some on my tires, just not as dark. But, this is Texas, so. . . . plenty of heat.

My sister lives in PHX and carries a hot mitt (like for baking) in the car.

If she forgets to put the sunshade in, its the only way to grip the wheel.

That is why I live in seattle lol.

It's a crack. Not unheard of on lugged tread tires. Nothing to stress about on a tire with 8700 miles on it. Ride it out and keep an eye on it. I've had cracked lugs on other brands and never had a problem wearing the tires out w/o failure. Oddly, there was an era of Heidenau K60s that suffered this more commonly than most, but of all the K60 Scouts I've abused, I never had any cracking of lugs or tread.

@Sierra1 - Tri-Cities is "High Desert", not the same as Desert. Cold in the Winter and Hot in the Summer. LOL I spent plenty of time in the high desert of the "dry side" of the Cascades and Sierras when I lived in Portland, OR. Nothing like the desert of Page or St George, etc. Where it gets truly hot and stays that way for months.

To me, "desert" means not a lot of rain, and plenty of sunshine. Richland was disqualified on both parts. Even when it wasn't raining or snowing, it was quite frequently dreary. I couldn't imagine living in Seattle. I saw two shirts while I lived there. 1) People in Seattle don't tan, they rust. 2) People in Seattle know if it's winter or summer by the temperature of the rain. :)
