Anyone use the safety weave to be seen?

In my opinion, the greatest threat to motorcyclists at intersections is a left-turning vehicle. There have been medical studies which suggest motorcycles are “not seen” by car drivers who are turning left because humans don’t perceive motorcycles as a threat, compared to the size of the car they are in. In essence, the brain appears to ignore the smaller vehicle that’s oncoming. How many times have you heard the stories where the driver of a car is quoted to say: “Honestly, Officer, I didn’t see him”?

As you approach the intersection, you must catch the eye of the left-turning driver by presenting yourself in their line of vision. By doing a slight weave within your lane, your headlight becomes an unusual moving object. This perhaps will gather more attention from that driver. Furthermore, don’t watch the driver’s eyes, but rather watch the front tire and what it is doing. I’ve had drivers look me straight in the eye and still initiate a left turn towards me. If at all possible, transit an intersection with a “buddy”: a car either to your left or right, which the left-turning driver will perceive as a threat. Always be on the lookout for escape lanes as you approach intersections. You should have a final resort if the driver happens to turn into your path. Lastly, don’t forget to double-check your turn signals after you’ve made a turn, and before you approach intersections. You don’t want to signal the wrong information!

In Uk that will be confusing as it's used generally to allow drivers to move out!

::026:: It basically telling the other driver that you are giving way to them. Also applies to most of EU and other non-EU countries, except Switzerland, where they just stare at you in bewilderment.......................... almost as if you flipped them the bird!

I usually flash my highbeam rapidly at them. I would hate to confuse a driver thinking I might be turning left also.
I'm with most on this there is no way I would flash my high beams in Canada or the USA. Weave...

No, I don't weave. Sometimes I wave at people waiting at intersections. It definitely gets their attention, even if they don't know who the hell I am.

I am a believer in the weave , with all the day time running lights on vehicles you have to stand out. as for "honestly I didn't see him" I believe though possible , its mostly a get out of jail free card. a lie that's been told so often by so many that its accepted as truth.... the same people pull out on commercial vehicles , its not as much I didn't see him as I thought I could beat him... but , they end up on the bad end of that one... people are in a hurry , they are late to something or someone , they believe they are better drivers than they are. I have seen , and you have too , the line of cars coming and a small gap between the last two cars. what happens is they will shoot the gap instead of waiting an extra 2 seconds to make the turn after the last car. they risk everything for their perceived self interest. your life and all that it entails is of little interest to most drivers . after the wreck where your injured or killed , and once they are off the hook legally , your just a bad after thought to most..... a few points on their insurance .... as for me , I am not a scientist who studies such things, what I am is a professional driver with over 3 million miles accident free, and that's in class A trucks . I've seen everything the idiots have to offer , I'm not impressed . law enforcement tries , but its mainly about revenue collection , and they will be there to comfort the poor person who" didn't see you" as they ran you down like a dog..... if you follow the law and the rules of the road , good for you, but you will be the only one out there that is....good luck with that... you have to develop some extra strategies even some that are not quite following the law or the rules.... not blatant disregard of the law or rules , we have all seen the squids who do that and there not here long. some tweeking would be a good thing , say a little faster or a little slower , yall get my drift , and the best advice I have , I never leave my driveway with out a little prayer........ need all the help I can get , cause I human too...

Good info. in this post, Thank You!
I will add one thing.... Maybe it's just here in Dallas/Fort Worth? We have a lot of youngsters on sport bikes doing some pretty crazy things. They call it "stunting." As a result...the police will ticket a motorcyclist doing anything they feel is out of the ordinary. I've heard of people being ticketed for just standing on their foot pegs when going on obstacles such as train tracks. Don't get me wrong...I'd rather be alive than ticketed. I AM going to be doing this safety weave as I'm usually on full alert when going through intersections.

The motorcycle safety forum had a big discussion about this several years ago. Rather than doing something that could be seen as unusual or a light movement which could be mis-interpreted to be flashing to let the cross traffic go ahead, I'm in the group which simply switches on the high beam and still be ready for somebody to still cut me off.

It's a great forum, with a lot of great threads when you have some time. Good for long waits at the airport for example.

I assume they ARE going to turn left in front of me.

I'm back to riding almost every single day. (after a couple of years of much less riding)
It is no exaggeration to claim that at least ONE person in a car\truck will require ME to alter my current intentions as a result of their unawareness, or outright lack of respect of my existence.

I spend little or no effort trying to get their attention, other than I have a habit of pointing. I'm not sure when I picked the habit up, but I have been doing it for many years.
My biggest regret is that it can be mistakenly taken for rudeness, but I don't mean it that way at all.
I compensate for it sometimes by raising my thumb and a slight helmet nod as the closest thing to a Thank you as I have come up with.

Some folks never noticed the point.
Some folks do and emotionlessly appear to accommodate (majority)
Some folks do and even appear to say "your welcome" (stereotypically male, and not real young)

I'm NOT advocating any of this except the very first statement. And we've all heard that one!

I sometimes do a little "jink". This is not a weave like I'm avoiding a road hazard. It's a quick, sharp shake of the headlights. The reason is - it's difficult to judge the speed and distance of an oncoming motorcycle. Even when they see you, they might not understand how fast you are approaching or how far away you are. Lateral movement, across your field of vision is far more detectable than linear movement - approaching or withdrawing from you.

The jink does 2 things.
1. It's an attention-getter by breaking up the "static" image in most drivers' field of view where an oncoming motorcycle just doesn't stand out.
2. It helps to set your position in the drivers' visual frame of reference because it's easier to pick up lateral motion.

It's not like I'm jinking all over the place, but I often do it when a vehicle is in position to cross my tragectory.

Effective but highly illegal to have forward mounted colored strobes like that.
Agreed.

The thing is though, you can have all the strobes, day glow clothing and even flags you want.

But if the other driver isnt actually bothering to look, it makes sod all difference.

::026:: I've been doing that ever since my two wheels didn't have a motor. You can't rely on the other person. And as already mentioned, strobes of ANY color, are usually illegal. (check ya'lls local state laws.) And, trust me, flashing lights, even with a siren, do not guarantee that you will be noticed.
