Someone, somewhere will have thought it's a 'must have' item and pulled the pin on it. You should see some of the stuff they do for the GS range...

WOW!! 50mm wide aluminium strip cut to 60mm and bent on each side by 15mm and drilled, job done $2.00. I'm sure RCinNC can do better and for much less, which reminds me that I have not seen any of his comments recently so he must be working on a large project....... ::017::

LOL, Hey Dogdaze! Actually, my most recent project wasn't motorcycle related; I rebuilt an overpriced and shoddily constructed box spring for a queen size bed. Don't ever look inside one of those things; you'll be appalled at what you're paying for as opposed to what you're actually getting. Shipping pallets are built with more care.

The prices on adventure bike aftermarket stuff never ceases to amaze me. It reminds me of my Harley days. One of the reasons I made my own 12 volt outlet holders was that SW Motech wanted 22 bucks for one of them. I bought a piece of aluminum for about 8 bucks and made two of them, with just a coping saw and a drill. Most of my designs have come from the reaction of "holy crap, you want a $150.00 for an aluminum tail rack made of a piece of 2mm aluminum with two bends in it??"

Yeah but you're actually paying for the plastic bolt cap, the holder is about $10 inc powder coating ::025::
You didn't build the box spring out of aluminium did you RC?

LOL, no, I didn't...I didn't want a box spring that was worth more than all my bedroom furniture combined. It was built out of 1x3 furring strips that I would have tossed in the garbage rather than use them even as furring strips.

I don't even have a bike project on the drawing board at the moment; it's a weird feeling, for sure.

What!! Well, it's still early in the new year, so you have another 11 months to string together a few projects for us to follow and / or attempt to copy...... ::008::

Awesome work man!

I'm looking for pre-made support for aux led lights. You have some already made? I want to go for some 15w or 20w chinese leds from around 40$. Cyclorider charge you for a 6 leds line almos 300 dollars, just because they are Plug and Play.

Sorry Deftoner, I don't have any pre-made parts; pretty much everything I make is a one-off custom project. If you're attaching them to crash bars, a set of U-clamps from a hardware store are a good basis for a light mount.

I've seen a lot of good reviews on Creed brand auxiliary lights, and they are reasonably priced.

Not aluminium, but STAINLESS STEEL. And fricken' LASER CUT too. Totally worth $37 plus S&H.

Another must have fairing from Puig this time ($136.71 on eBay) :

... and its homemade aluminum equivalent (11.00 euros of material and two hours of cold forming) :

Okay, Puig's cache is prettier and better finished, okay

I'm lucky to make a bowl of oatmeal with the right consistency. You "fabber" types blow my mind w/ your abilities and equipment! I've been eyeballing Touratech products for years but have yet to own any. Closest I came was buying a few stickers but the S&H turned me off.

I bought a GPS cradle from TT b/c they’re the only game in town that does it. Stung since the odds of finding a second hand 276cx TT cradle is pretty much zero. The rest of it they can keep.

I was browsing around on what accessories are out there for the Super Tenere. And I found this "ABS protector" 37 dollars. for a crapy piece of metal http://www.touratech-usa.com/Store/PN-046-0630/ABS-Sensor-Guards-Front-Rear-Yamaha-XT1200Z-Super-Tenere

I know, touratech was always pricey (more when I saw the prices from Argentina) but, come on... Who will bought that pieces of metal for 37 dollars??? Its insane.
I got a Touratech windscreen adjuster, after 3 months the paint started chipping off. Overpriced crap imo.

I'm fully capable of fabricating my own stuff but have chosen to go the Touratech route on a lot of the protection. The ABS protectors are well worth the 40 bucks to me. It would take me too much time to hunt down the hardware, cut, drill and bend the stainless. I look at labor as part of the cost. I figure at even compared to an hour of my time, 40 bucks is pretty cheap for something ready to bolt on.

I’m certain the ADV market, much like the Harley and BMW market get soaked in all upgrades and accessories because they can for exactly the reasons stated above. Sure most of us can fabricate something almost as good if not better. As adults usually 30+ years in age, we know that sorting out the required tools, sourcing the materials and clean up, would cost us more hourly than any of us care to spend.

Sure this stinks, but we value time, with our friends, loved ones, actually riding out bikes or just taking a much needed nap, much more than begrudgingly wasting too much time fabricating extras. It’s not fair, especially when most of us will happily install such items or do most of our own maintenance.

You don’t see near the upcharge on accessories for bikes made as a younger person’s first or second motorcycle.

Just the time it takes looking for a best price on the net takes time away from what you actually would rather be doing.

My late uncle used to fabricate things for his ATVs like racks. Usually because he wanted something different, and enjoyed doing the fabrication, but he always made a minimum of 3-4 of the same accessory because he knew his riding buddies would ask where he got the basket or rack. They would eventually if not sooner ask if he could fabricate another for their ATV. So he usually didn’t anodize whatever if it was aluminum, until a request cane in. Just one sale paid for his materials. Selling the remaining leftovers gave him money to buy any raw materials he needed to order if he had a new idea.

As you get older, you pay more for almost everything. Sad fact of life.

I hate getting soaked on ADV gear as much as the next guy.

I've got quite a lot of Touratech stuff on my bike, all bought used and the quality is OK on most of it but often you can buy the same product unbranded for the fraction of the cost. I bought a Chinese headlight guard for £30, the Touratech version was £99 and a 6 week wait for delivery.
