I've just discovered another option - the Mitas E-07 dualsport tires aren't available in the US yet, but well liked by Aussie and Sth African S10 riders. BUT... they are available in Canada, and even with $45 shipping they are quite a bit cheaper than a pair of K60s.
http://www.mx1canada.com/Mitas-E07-Rear-130-80-17.html

$CA284.90 (about $US280) delivered for the pair of Mitas, vs $324 for the pair of K60s delivered from Revzilla (Don't forget to talk to Jaxon - rideonadv.com - if you need some!). You might find them a bit cheaper than that, but as far as I can tell there is little discounting going on with the Heidenau.

If you're interested in getting them to the US, you could pester them here;

This from the Central Oz ride report - yes that is gear oil around the hub - apparently a temporary condition, a result of hundreds of mile of corrugated roads...

Confirmed. This will happen if you do 100's of Km of bad corrugated roads. Oil leaks out the vent, because, well, it is trying to vent.

Top up with a few cc's next time you get a chance. This bike continued on it's merry way, Had a few sleeps along the route and got home fine 2000Km later.

Yep... we have free shipping and shoot them out for 312... Those look like the old K60's... do you know where those are made ? Germany or Korea ? I wonder if they sold the old molds to someone ? Do you know if these knobs are staying in place ? Any ride reports on these ? Thanks! And for people that don't know, the K60 Scouts are made in Germany,... ::008::

Mita and Heidenau = same factory.

Yes, they are essentially the same tire, re-branded. Difference with the Mita...no DOT approval stamp.

I don't think that's true - Mitas = Trelleborg, from Czecho... and the Trelleborg brand is being phased out.

I contacted Mitas USA about 9 months ago, they said they didn't have DOT approval for the tires but were working on it. I contacted them again today to check on progress.

So I guess if you got them from Canada, with no DOT approval, and were involved in an accident, you could potentially be in deep shit?

As far as wear or problems, not too many reports to be had but in the ones I've seen, no mentions of problems and wear rates of around 6-8000 miles for the rear. But none of those were Super Tenere.

Not quite the same pattern either - I think this is the earlier version of the Scout?

Mitas USA replied to my inquiry

"We are reviewing the lineup for 2012 and if we start bringing them in it will be posted on the news section of www.mitasmx.com"

Sounds like it's possible but not happening any time soon.

Hi,
the Mitas E-07 is really made in the Czech Republic - http://www.mitas.eu/index.php?jazyk=english
I read couple of feedbacks on local BMW GS and KTM Adventure forums, and the users are quite satisfies with those tires. You have to know, that the current price for set of E-07 in my country is around 175,-USD, what is almost half compare to Heidenau. I use Mitas EF-07 on my Yamaha WR 450 and I have to say that this is the best tire I’ve ever ride. When I meet my friends from Austria or Germany, I always have to bring couple of sets for them…

The Heidenau K76's look pretty good as well. Most of my riding will be on paved roads so the K60 might be a bit to aggressive?

Vendor thread question, no?
Not sure about that, seems like a good idea. I guess you'd have to order through Yukon Yamaha for that to work?

I'm gonna try the mitas e 07 tires , I do air down often in sand , I am wondering if I should go with the Dakar or just the standard, any imput from those who have used these tires ? Is the extra ply worth it ?

Errmmm.... Not really. I've had the front 4ply down to about
10 psi without issue. 3 ply is the same tire.
I've posted a few reviews of the tires, checkout thetenerist.wordpress.com
Search mitas

The ply ratings usually don't mean anything for the sidewall, that's where you would like to see an extra ply if you are running soft a lot.
