My new bike. Steel, Campy 12-speed. I waited 42 years for this bike. In 1980, as a college freshman, i put a team together to race the Iowa State "Little 500" modeled after the Indiana University Little 500.
We had an ISU wrestler on our team, and he HATED to lose. We won because of him. That was on a Saturday. On that Saturday night, my girlfriend at the time dumped me. (Her loss - ha!) On Monday, when ABC had a Monday movie, the movie "Breaking Away" was aired as part of their "Academy Award" series. I watched that, and vowed one day to have an Italian bicycle with Campy record components. I even bought a "Barber of Seville" CD to listen on my way to bicycle races (I raced for a decade.)
Well, the bike was made in Portland, OR, but with Columbus tubing. Sort of Italian - and it looks like a Gios Torino. It took a while to get the geometry right (i am 6'4" with long legs and arms).
It is Campy Record/Super Record 12-speed, so that goal was met. I finally have my "Italian" bicycle. With three cassettes, three chains, three sets of chain rings, three sets of idler pulleys and Campy tools, the bike cost as much as my Super 10 did in 2014. I've ridden the bicycle more than the super 10 this year. I had three NOS Turbo saddles, so that's what's on the bike. The build was supposed to have white bar tape, but that won't be here for a while, so black it is. It was supposed to be my 1980's throwback.
