It's time for the next segment. I am really slow at this...

After we left our camp at the Baja 1000 site near San Felipe, we headed South in direction of Bahia de Los Angeles.

The day was pretty uneventful, but the evening not so much. We opted to share a hotel room that night as we were in a need of good showers. The evening started great as we met a local family who had set up a large BBQ area in the parking lot right in front of our room. We were treated with delicious ceviche tacos and made new friends.

However the rest of the night took a different turn...to make a long story short...my friend JP has a fairly strong nut allergy. A couple years ago he had to be hospitalized while working on show in London.

Around 8pm we headed out to find a place to have some drinks and a few more bites. We met a local couple in their Dodge Minivan who guided us to a lodge outside of town (can't remember the name right now). We were in good company as there was a group of about 10 or so Mexican AdvRiders already in the bar area and we had met a couple of these guys earlier that day on the road.
We placed our orders but despite our questions and precautions, the meal that was served to JP at dinner had traces of peanuts. It quickly became a rush to find Benadryl and head back to the hotel room to have this Epipen ready just in case.

After making sure he was okay, I went out again solo to get some cold beers at the local market (still open!) and to my surprise, this younger guy and his girlfriend approached me and started asking about my friend...they also indicated where the local health center was. I believe they were working at the lodge and they had been the ones running around to find Benadryl...it was nice to see that they care. I thanked them a lot, grabbed my beers and headed back to the room...ready to move on and start a fresh day of adventure tomorrow.

It ended up being okay except for him being sick all night from all the Benadryl he had taken (and probably compounded by stress).

There was still a lot of ground to cover ahead of us.

Next installment...Punta Abreojos!

We wanted to camp on the Pacific side and catch the sunset. Initially we were tempted to go to Bahia Tortugas but we ended up settling on Punta Abreojos.
it is a beautiful drive, mostly all paved. It felt really remote.

We drove around a bit and initially ventured near the beautiful beach to spend the night there. However it was quite challenging...all of us got stuck at various stages..but it was all fun.
This is where having good friends really helps, as I can't imagine getting this bike unstuck by myself.
Eventually wanting a little bit more comfort we decided to head over to Campo Rene to spend the night, and enjoy a warm dinner.

Campo Rene location is a bit more protected from the elements which makes a great place to spend the night.

We also meet some friendly travelers while we were there.

We're back on the road! It's about 5 months since we left the bikes at the covered spot near the airport.

When we left them, we only had 2 covers...so one bike suffered a bit more.

We had unplugged the batteries on all 3 and surprisingly they were all still charged enough to start the bikes. The black one started right away but both blue ones too a very long time. I got scared that they will not start but eventually they did. I would crank it for maybe 30 seconds then wait a few minutes, then try again. They both managed to start before I kill the battery - wouhouh!!!

I also somehow managed to misplaced the keys for the black one but luckily we had a set hidden on the bike. So all good at the end!

We brought the bikes to our AirBnb rental in Todos Santos and spent the next 12 hours getting them ready! There was a myriad of small things to do.

We also needed to replace the rear tire on one of the bikes but we just took it to a local shop. I brought a brand new tire with me in a duffel bag and it was no problem with the airplane or the customs.

So my friends spending a few days riding around and now it's my turn!!
They had a little mishap with my bike but it's all fixed now.

See this thread for more details:

This happened about 20 km outside of San Evaristo. It was a very difficult track with rock fields and pretty much every bike suffered.

Front windshield, front fender, rear Touratech rack, etc....this was a tough ride.

But everything is fixed now and we're back on the road again!

We eventually ended up in LaPaz where we spend a couple days, including a lot of maintenance on the bike. The rear pads were shot on one of the bike, but we found a local brake place that "repad' them in a couple hours.

Our friend opened up a bar last year - Tikki Todd. check it out if you pass by:

From there we headed just north of Ciudad Constitution to take another "shortcut" over to Loreto. We met 2 guys on the road who joined us for the day/night.

It was a beautiful ride with just enough sandy section to make sure all of dropped our bikes a couple times..

:)

The next day we rode along side what I think is the best part of Baja to camp - Bahia Conception. We also did a quick stop in Santa Rosalia which is a fun town to visit and we had missed it on the way down.

In San Ignacio we ran into a group of dirt bikers doing a fund-raising ride.

Next time we go to Baja, i think that's how I want to do it. Fully supported and using hotels, and light bike.

We keep riding North over the next few days and barely made it in time to avoid yet more snow again in Tahoe. We stopped by Valle de Guadalupe which I had been wanting to check for a long time, and it did not disappoint. We also spend a couple days in Ensenada and manage to catch up with some friends at the NORRA 1000. The timing was perfect!

So here is the tally across three(3) 2012 Super Tenere after 1 month riding from Reno to Cabo and back. All 3 bikes have around 33000 miles now.

-1 Front forks leak (we tried the fork save tool but did not really helped)
-2 broken front fenders
-1 broken flasher (the rubber broke while in storage)
-1 flat tire
-1 worned out tire (Mitas - we brought back a Heidenau in our luggage)
-1 broken rear Touratech rack
-1 broken oil pan
-1 broken tall windshield (my friend flew through in a sand trap)
-1 broken Yamaha OEM side case (sort of..it had already been repaired but broke again)
-1 set of rear pads needed to be replaced
-1 headlight bulb
-About 1 quart of oil across all 3 bikes

Also some awards:

-The Jesse luggage were by far the favorites between the 3. Sturdier, and the folding top was very useful.
-The AltRider rear rack was also the best.
-The Altrider skid plate also wins over the small aluminum one (not sure the brand)
-The Heidenau tires were perfect, although they do need replacing now after about 5000 miles.
-Best aftermarket mod: Cheap amazon cup holders attached to the case. Perfect to carry sunblock, Gatorade, Beer, pesos, whatever you want to get to fast...

Temperature ranged from 27F to 110F. Overall, it was a lot colder than I expected both on the way down (End of November) and on the way back (End of April).

Absolutely zero issue with cops/theft/etc. Super easy park/fly right next to the airport (https://www.sjparknfly.com/). Just don't forget the third motorcycle cover...

IMG_9614 (1).jpg

90% of the adventure bike we saw on the road were some variations of BMW models. Even though it's a bit geeky to have 3 identical Super Tenere, it actually helps a lot as you can share the same spare parts, make the same fuel stops, same maintenance, etc. My friends who flew over really liked them and we're actually looking to buy a few more...

The entire trip was a huge success and we are now planning the next adventure!!!
