All right this is happening! We are finally going back to Baja.

This time we are taking three 2012 Super Tenere from Reno and riding all the way to the bottom.
We'll be leaving around November 16th and the plan is to be in Los Barriles for Thanksgiving to celebrate with my wife and with some friends. We're also hoping to catch a flavor of the Baja 1000 as we pass through.

One of these bikes we actually just got purchased here a few weeks ago from a fellow member and picked it up in Las Vegas. So far so good!

I am sure there is already a thread somewhere but which spare parts would you bring?

Any recommendation on place not to be missed to go camping along the way? I know there are severals good spots and we've already drove down a couple times but I am always curious to see if we've missed anything!

We'll make sure to post some updates here!

That sounds like an epic trip. A week to do roughly 1500-1600 miles means you can stop and smell the roses a little bit. Do you plan to just burn straight down to the border on day 1 or are you gonna split it up a bit? If you plan to spend a night or two on the way down to the border, are you coming over the hill and taking 5 or 99 down, or are you taking 395 down to So.Cal.?
I ask because that makes a difference on where one might want to camp. If you shoot down 395 and plan to cross at Mexicali, it's worth the detour to hit Joshua Tree for a night, especially this time of year.

Man, I gotta admit that I'm a little jealous. Take lots of pics and do a ride review for us.

Thanks - we plan to take 395 and I was indeed considering staying at Joshua Tree for a night. Then get across the border the next day.
From there we are pretty flexible.

From Joshua Tree I would ride down through scenic twisty Cleveland NF and cross the border at Tecate. Much better ride than Mexicali.

That should be a pretty good route. I might change it from Julian to Alpine, take 79 South or Sunshine Highway into Pine Valley area, then there are a number of great small roads that will take you south to Tecate. Much nicer riding than the route you have there unless you have to just blast miles.

Is there a thread here or on ADVrider that has a list of recommended spare parts to carry? Search function is not really helping.

Thanks!

If you like, I could make a few suggestions on what to check and what parts to bring……

I traveled for 2.5 months/17,000 miles on my Tenere. I needed oil, oil filters, tires and one fuse in my SAE cable. If you don't already have fork "Shock Sox" on your front forks, get them.

Ill do the best I can, when things pop back up and remind me, I will add to the list.. This is from past experience on many Tenere motorcycles.

Items to check:

-Check all wheel bearings
-Air filter
-Spark plugs
-10mm nut under the clutch and brake levers (add red lock tight)
-Oil level (or change)
-Rear diff oil
-Bolt holding on the shifter near your left ankle, lube and add lock tight
-Check spokes for general tightness
-Check rims for cracks from the spoke holes to the outer lip. This space Is approximately 1/8" and that is where they crack. Run your fingernail over the area to check.
-Pop the two plastic pins out of the bottom of the (dirty) side of the air box. (bottom of the box, for any drainage)
-** Because all three are 2012 units this brings up something a bit different. I would install a clutch rebuild kit in each of them if this has not been done before. The 12 / 13 have many more wear issues versus the 14+. Also flush the brake and clutch fluid. If you find that after pulling the plunger out of the clutch, if you see wear on the aluminum plunger (I personally) would pull the slave cylinder and wash and clean all the garbage out of that very well. I would probably go so far as to pull the piston out of the slave and "eye-ball" the wear on the piston. If it has wear I would replace it. Ive seen this several times and you could have some clutch issues.. (this is mostly a "check" to make sure you're not close to an issue. It's easy to fix (if need be) at your place. It would be very hard in Mexico). The rebuild kit is cheap and really good maintenance for the 12 / 13 units.
-Check fork tubes for any oil and the seal. Any oil seen, seal(s) need to be fixed. (this is NOT running a thin piece of plastic around the seal to "clean" it. If you have any oil at all on the lower leg, this specifically means replace the seal with a brand new part. Also, if any of the three bikes need this service I would also recommend replacing the guides. The Tenere tends to be hard on guides and if the fork is torn down at this stage, it's very easy to throw a new set on. )
-If you have time, I suggest you check, and add lock tight and re torque the steer tube nut on top of the triple tree's. It's know that the 12 / 13 came loose.... The 12 more than the 13's I have found. I believe that is 94 Lbs. but double check.
-Check brake pad thickness, front and rear.
-Check the rubber nipple on the RIGHT throttle body. I would replace all three (one on each bike) . By this time the 2012/13 are cracking and creating an air leak with the TB's.... Just throw a new one on with a new clip.

Parts to bring with you:

-2-3 wheel bearings. It would be the same as the non-drive rear and the two fronts. If you have any issue with that rear bearing you're not going to find one down there. Also, if you have come across some of my other post, if you ride very far with the rear bearing broken it will tear up $1500-$3000 worth of parts and will end your day. Carry a few bearings in this location of the world.

-Tire repair "kit"

******JBWeld > If you don't know what this can do or how to use it PLEASE practice a bit before you go. This can get you out of some serious jams. Fixing an oil pan, fixing a clutch cover, fixing a water pump, fixing saddle bags..... Ive help others with all this before.
(Make sure to get the QUICK and the ORIGINAL .... Sometimes you are in a place you DON'T want or cant wait 24 hours to leave (for it to set up and dry properly)....... wink-wink ). I would bring serveral packages of each kind. You never know if you need a bit more to get you out of a jam. This stuff can seriously save your A## in a bind.

-Among all three of you, bring a few tools for basic repair.

-If you dont change out brake pads before you leave, bring a whole set between the three of you... With the sand and grit one of you might need a rear set.

-Maybe a air filter. (I've seen the silt, I've ridden in very similar silt in Utah.) Wont take long to clog that up in the wrong conditions.

- Extra fuses, Not sure if you have driving lights. If you do, I HOPE they are on a stand alone system. If they are, they are fused and incase of a tip over or fall you will have extra fusses... (this will depending how they are wired up)

- I would suggest each of you safety wire your grips on your bike. It's easy insurance incase someone falls in water or has any issues.

Im personally a big maintenance NERD.... I did not mention all the normal maintence items... This is just understood that all the normal stuff is already done.

Baja in 2012 was my 2012's first big trip. Crossed at Tecate in March, needed warm raingear.

Whale watching near Guerrero Negro is spectacular at that one very specific time of year.

There were 10 of us. We didn't go the whole way, just Bahia De Los Angeles and Mulege. The only mechanical in 10 x 2600 miles was a flat tire.

The 2012 is still going strong. Rode to Saline Valley with 100+ miles of dirt this time last year. I've saved Tabasco's list because she deserves some preventative TLC!

We only stayed at motels with enclosed parking. On the way north, don't have any guns, drugs or money in your luggage. :) Have fun and be sure to stop and smell the roses!

Thank you! - would you have the part number for the wheel bearing by any chance? I'll do some research on my side too.

Getting closer to the departure. It's super cold and it's been snowing a lot in Tahoe, so the first day is going to be a bit of an adventure...

2 of us are leaving for Reno, and one of us from San Francisco. We'll meet somewhere near the border. We're hoping to cross early Friday morning and catch the Baja race somewhere.

The challenge for tonight is deciding what to do with the visor situation. I bought a new Klim Krios which came with one clear and one Transition lens.

The transition seems perfect but it came with a big sticker on it that says "for day time use only".
Ideally I would need to go for a ride right now and try it, but it's really cold and my wife is about to make pizza...

:)

I wore Bell for years and always with Transitions visors, day and night. I assume they say "day use only" for some legal reasons but I never had any issues with night usage.
