The Belgians did an interesting experiment.
They told people that were taking their driving test that the now have to pass a diving test
that proves they can text and drive. For safety reasons they did this at low speeds and on a test course.

The results are both interesting and funny.

Brilliant! That needs to be required viewing for anyone to pass a driving test!

The problem, in part as I see it, is that young people grew up with mobile phones, they conduct their lives while looking at the screen, rude is one aspect, they believe they can do it while driving because they can do it in all other parts of their lives. Driving is a skill they learn a lot later in life.I don't. I'm old, I never had a mobile phone when I was growing up,the first phone I had was a Motorola transportable phone with it's own suitcase ::025::.

I take driving / riding as serious business and although my riding skills can be brushed up, my driving ability is quite good, through training and age I might add. I cannot text while driving and hate it when my wife texts me when she knows I'm driving, just call me, I HAVE BLUETOOTH dammit!
I don't mind if a texter dies while doing stupid stuff, but invariably they take out some poor innocent instead.

I have a friend that is a world authority in traffic management. Works for many different countries.
One interesting thing he told me was that texting really messes up traffic in a bad way.
Very often textures will end up leaving huge space in front of them because they are intent on finishing what they are doing.
This leads to traffic backing up behind them that has a trickle down effect ... way way back. This in turn causes sudden changes in traffic speed
and leads to rear endings even a mile or two behind the tester.

The problem becomes compounded when there are more than one tester/browser in the same lens.

It really has to stop...... smart phones are really smart.... we just need slightly smarter people.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself !!!!!

Fred -
While texting is bad and the video is cute, the title and basis for this thread is false.
The 2013 (most recent) NHTSA FARS data shows 10,076 alcohol related fatal accidents, versus 3,154 fatalities attributed to distracted driving. In percentage terms - "Alcohol-impaired-driving fatalities decreased by 2.5 percent from 2012 to 2013, accounting for 31 percent of 2013 overall fatalities."
fwiw - The total crashes in 2013 were 5,687,000 and "In 2013, 32,719 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in the United States, a 3.1-percent decrease from the 33,782 fatalities in 2012."

On a related and positive side note of interest:
"Motorcycle riders showed the greatest decrease in the number of alcohol-impaired drivers involved in fatal crashes from 2012 to 2013, dropping 8.3 percent or by 117 riders. This was both the greatest percentage drop and the greatest drop in actual alcohol-impaired drivers."

"...article I read..."
"...a meeting of..."
"From what I see..."
"I think..."

Your title and post are still wrong.

Take the time to look into the extensive amount of data collected, as well as the research done and in process. I have for a very long time.
