I am amazed at the number of drivers I see lane wandering on the freeways only to pass them very cautiously and see that they aren't drunk, they are texting.

I wish the CHP would police this more than they seem to be. If I see so may people doing this why doesn't the CHP?

So, your lesson here is:

Don't filter on two lane roads. [snip - CW]
Expect the driver behind you in the turn lane to impulsively take off when the other light turns green. I see this all the time, even w/o texting, but most people realize it before going more than a foot or two.

Never, EVER filter to the front and pull in front of an obviously distracted driver. [snip - CW]

I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume you were going to turn left in the left turn lane. [snip - CW] stop with an escape route planned when ever you are in such a circumstance where faster traffic can come up behind you and you are stopped. IOW, get in line for the turn lane.

My understanding is correct, Law Enforcement lost a valuable tool... they are no longer allowed to access the information on a texter's phone. Unless they see the texter and the phone/device they can't use the information against them in court.

I could be wrong since I have only heard this on the news and not read it.

Over here, they dont need to access phone records to issue a ticket.
They can if you are involved in an accident though and need evidence for court.

It drives me absolutely nuts seeing drivers using/messing with a mobile phone whilst driving, if only they could experience the utter devastation caused to families and friends of victims of accidents caused by the behaviour of these morons.

There is NOTHING so important that it can't wait until your journey is over or you are safely pulled over

If enough of you write to your government ministers, it might happen. Over here it was the other way round. Government decided it would be illegal and we got used to it. Most people here are happy with the situation. but most of us drive cars with a manual gearbox and need both hands to operate the vehicle safely.

The great movie director Werner Herzog made a brilliant documentary called "From One Second To The Next" about driving and texting/browsing phones while driving.
It is quite something. What is brilliant is that a very large part of the documetary is the texters telling their story.

The ending is brilliant too.

A blacksmith in a few words says it all. It's a must see.

It's also quite well paced and not too long.
Yep I saw that :)

It's even worse over here!! All these modern expensive cars and yet they still have a phone stuck to their ear, although illegal, they don't enforce. The problem is, and this is not an excuse, but tech in cars take a few years to develop and then are in the car until next model change (5-7 years), whereby, phone manufactures are updating their software every few months when the next 'new' model come out. Auto makers cannot update the cars to new versions of compatible software. The biggest culprit at the moment is Apple products, while all very cool to have the latest version, not so good in a car.
