OK the dirty bit was about 5.3L/100km. That was partly due to powering through sand , partly lower gears.thagua said:Wish I could do the same trip. Graham, how do you manage to have such a wonderful outcome on your fuel comsumption. What changes have you done to your engine setup. Mine is only 15.5 km per liter.
Cheers,
Roberto
The long straight tarmac stretches without trees crept up to 5.5 when the right wrist was in "please just get to the end of this" mode and I could see any wildlife easily.
But in "wildlife avoidance mode", which was about 1500Km worth I was running 100Km/h max, and covering the brake.
I should get a helmet cam really. There would be probably 1/2 an hour of me riding around carcasses and through flocks of birds feeding on carcasses, OR dodging Emu's, wild pigs, Kangaroos, goats or bits of carcasses thrown at me from trucks...
It is really amazing just how many animals are out there in the dry country, dead or alive.
But I did notice when I first got the bike that I had a hard time sucking fuel at the rate some people had found. I usually run 95RON, 91RON for about 1000Km of that trip, and a tank of 98RON just to pamper the girl a bit after the 1000Km of 91.
The VStrom was lucky to get 6L/100 ridden easily and that thing was synced, adjusted and sweet talked.
After that trip I have decided as an all round bike and travel machine the S10 just rocks. That's all can say. Fuel Range, Fuel quality variation, ability, tough, off road, carrying capacity., wildlife avoidance... For my country it's the bees knees, along with KTM's and GSA's but with $7K left to spend on accessories and less mechanical drama.
