So today I got to ride my first Tenere. A 2012 model with 24,000 miles. I haven't ridden anything buy my Royal Star for the last 4 years so it was quite a shock to the system, but I really enjoyed it. First I must say.... the Royal Star is a 5 speed and 5th is a true overdrive. You don't need it until at least 70mph. So needless to say, I felt like I was shifting my butt off in city traffic. I could also really tell that it was only 2 cylinders instead of the 4 I'm used to. Not so much on the highway but at take off... it just felt completely different. That being said, I loved the riding position, how easy it tracked, cornered, shifted, stopped... it was great. Couple things I really didn't like were the soft suspension and the brake pedal could have been a smidge lower for my old legs... all things I could address.

Unfortunately, the dealer who was selling it did not want to make me a deal. I was looking to trade in the Royal Star but he wanted me to take rock bottom price for it. The price on the Tenere was not bad at all but unless someone is offering me a great deal I never take it first time out. Maybe they will soften in a week or so. If not, I'll find something else I feel. I'll keep looking. But after this test ride, I firmly believe that a Tenere belongs in my garage.

Factory settings on forks and rear shock are soft and all adjustable.
Mode S or T are different on takeoff I flashed my ECU and it gets with it right now.
Can do over the speed limits on any road in 3rd so shifting isn't bad.

I tried adjusting the rear shock. I found this online, but this says something about numbers of clicks? The bike I test rode had a red knob with a clockwise arrow and the letter H, and a counter clockwise arrow and the letter S. I figure it was for harder and softer? Anyway, I tried turning it clockwise but it made no difference.

I'm 165 lbs and have the rear real close to hard line and there is another adjust in the bottom I have at about center of adjustment.
Front forks have 3 adjustments

After all these years it's possible the knob has been stripped. Not sure about the red knob, that's not OEM. The bike really needs to be on the centerstand to make adjustments to the preload, especially tightening.

Lotta teneres for sale all over the place. Take your time and you will find a good deal. Bought my '12 with 25k miles, perfect maintenance records, panniers crash bars and heated grips for $6k. Not to be a pest, but maybe drive a 1000cc vstrom too. They are good bikes.

Thanks. I seriously considered the Vstrom. It's a great value for the money. But I found a very clean 2012 with less than 10K miles. Couldn't be happier.
