Two weeks after I purchased my KLR I did a 100 mile or so ride along the coast of Freeport and Galveston and had a fine mist/fog coming off the water across the road. By the time I got home 2 -3 hours later my steel spokes looked just like that. :'( You will end up with a crusty white film on them if exposed to salt spray and the damage is done with steel spokes.
I have had this happen before with a YZ or two (after I forgot about the last time ???) while exposed to salt spray, wet sand or dredge mud along the coast. You get home after that same day to wash them and it is too late. :'(
