Sierra1 is right- compact size, and low rpm torque. I feel my S10 is smooth enough. Most of the others are not using 3 cylinder engines. Though I have wondered how much difference I'd notice if my bike didn't fire at 270 degrees, but rather, 180?

I absolutely loved my Triumph Tiger 955i triple, a gem of an engine with power and character.....sounds great too! The Tenere engine is bland and boring in comparison, but it's also been reliable and that's not boring to me. I have ridden the FZ09 and love that engine as well, I wished for an ADV version of it but Yamaha made the FJ09 which doesn't quite check the boxes I wanted. I would like to see a Yamaha triple ADV bike, but don't expect it to happen.

I tried the 3 cylinder Niken for half a day, its vibes are more frequent but also more sharper than S10, The S10 has very smooth and low frequency vibration up to 4500 revs. After that it get some more sharper, at least mine does. But I only have 8000 km-s on spido, so perhaps it smoothhes even more after proper milage.

I have a friend who changed his 1200 gs for an S1000xr. he only did 2000 miles and he changed it again for another GS1200 LC. It was not customary for the engine to turn all the time to 9000 tr / m

I am on my second S10 and personally like the "vibration" of the 270 degree engine. Much more satisfying to me than any 180 or 360 degree twin and a lot more satisfying than any inline 4 I have owned or ridden. One of the most boring engines I have ridden is the Honda CB1100 retro, whose engine was so smooth as to have no character at all, so I didn't have the feeling of riding a bike with an internal combustion engine. Other inline 4's had high frequency vibes that didn't appeal to me. I had a 1999 BMW R1100S and never did get to love the character of that boxer twin, so didn't keep it long. I have ridden the FJ09 and like the triple, but find the FZ09 twin to be much more fun and love the character of that engine. When the T7 comes to the USA with that engine next year, I will have one, but plan to keep my 14 ES. I even love the feeling of the power pulses on my DR650 and my previously owned 1997 Super Hawk V twin engine provided one of the most pleasing experiences of any bike I have owned.

So, it really is different strokes for different folks. I have to love an engine's character before I can love or even like a bike. It is good that we have so many choices to match our preferences in bikes.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong. :D

The only bike that I've ridden, and even noticed vibration was the 1150 RT. 20 minutes at 75mph, and my right hand was numb. And, the only motor that I would rather have in the Tenere is the one from the FJR. Effortless, and seemingly limitless power delivery....but that would change the Tenere to something else. And, I'm just satisfied with it, as it is. I'm with fred, ride what ya' like; doesn't make sense not to.

That's part of the problem. The general motorcycle buyer, who rarely rides, but spends money, will want what everyone else has. (Keeping up with the Jonese). I mean come on, that sorry excuse for an agricultural pump of the BMW boxer is junk, vibrates all day and can't get out of it's own way. There is NO reason to keep making that crap, except that it sells well to idiots that over pay just to have what others have sitting in their garages.

Why do you think the T700 has a chain? Because Yamaha perceives that people in that market want chains so they can change gearing. Otherwise Yamaha could have been the first manufacturer to product a mid size, shaft drive adventure bike since the air cooled BMW 800GS.
Well said Eric. And yes I partly fall into the "general motorcycle rider" category as in I don't ride as much as I like (these days). OTOA I have never been one to keep up with the jonses type of guy. I want comfortable and reliable. And when racing I wanted a bike I could win on.

Tell me about it. It took only one test ride on a BMW GS to convince me what in the hell were they thinking!!?? It was one of the most vibrating ill handling machines I ever swung a leg over. FWIW, just talk to the cops/CHP that ride them. BMW wins hands down for electrical capacity. But I have not talked to one cop who did not love the Honda ST1300. Well maybe one who said it was scary fast!! That and I had to jump start one because the Honda has a hard time keeping up with all the electrical doo dads law enforcement requires of their machines.

Scary fast? IF it was a true LE version from Honda, it was electronically limited to 120mph. FRUSTRATING. If a department made their own LE bike from a "regular" ST 1300, it was not limited, and therefore COULD go quite fast. IMO the FJR is a better bike, but the lighter, slow speed, steering of the Honda, made it a better LE bike. And, you're right, a BMW style extra battery would have helped the Honda with the electrical load.

I dunno, at freeway speeds my Tenere seems as smooth as my old ST1300. I was really surprised at that when I first got it and still had the ST13 at the same time for side by side comparisons. At different RPM you can feel the motor more in the Tenere but it seems like a feeling of the power impulses rather than an irritating vibration.

Why they don't do one model but good enough to not to have to switch from tear to year?
you are right .... why does bmw manufacture 750 and 850?....why Gs 1200 Air, 1200 LC (rigth shaft), 1250 (left shaft) .... why KTM manufactures 990,1090,1190,1290? ..... Programmed obsolescence??... I chose S10.... ten years... little changes
